ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College field hockey team celebrated two milestone moments on Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field, rolling to a 6-0 victory over Simmons University. Senior forward
Claire Weidenhammer recorded her 100th career point as part of a four-point afternoon, while first-year head coach
Sophie Popp earned her first career win leading the Dutchmen.
LVC dominated from the opening whistle, outshooting the Sharks 30-4 and holding a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. The Dutchmen put 20 shots on goal and forced Simmons goalkeeper Haley Bright to make 14 saves. Weidenhammer opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season on a blast from just inside the circle. The Dutchmen continued to pressure offensively, generating 10 shots and four penalty corners in the opening quarter.
The lead doubled early in the second period as
Lilah Shaub scored her first goal of the season just 1:10 into the quarter. Shaub was able to push the ball into the back of the cage after
Jillian Tait had a shot saved. Later in the period, Weidenhammer converted a penalty stroke in the 24th minute to extend the advantage to 3-0 heading into halftime.
Lebanon Valley put the game out of reach early in the third quarter. Tait scored her first goal of the year at 32:36 before Weidenhammer completed her hat trick less than five minutes later.
Alexis Nasuta delivered the assist on the goal off a corner insertion, which made it 5-0 and pushed Weidenhammer over the 100-career-point milestone. Weidenhammer took the insertion at the top of the circle and fired a blast into the back of the cage. The Dutchmen capped the scoring in the 43rd minute when first-year
Kaitlyn Honig scored her first collegiate goal on a breakaway off an assist from Weidenhammer.
Inside the Box
- Weidenhammer finished with game highs of three goals, one assist, 11 shots, and six shots on goal. She now has 101 career points on 44 goals and 13 assists. The senior recorded the fourth hat trick of her career.
- Shaub scored her second career goal on her only shot of the game.
- Tait added six shots scored her 11th career goal.
- Nasuta recorded an assist and helped the Dutchmen create numerous scoring opportunities on penalty corners.
- Danika Setlock contributed four shots while Aubrey Gahman had three off the bench.
- Defensively, Lebanon Valley was in control throughout the afternoon. Simmons managed just four shots, all in the second half and only two were on goal.
- Goalkeeper Ella Weidenhammer turned aside both shots she faced to earn her 10th career shutout.
