ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College baseball team crossed the plate 10 times in the bottom of the first inning, setting the tone for the program's 19-5 run-rule win over Lancaster Bible College in seven innings on Wednesday, April 8, at McGill Field.
The Flying Dutchmen received contributions from several members of its lineup during the victory, as 10 players recorded RBIs and 11 scored runs. LVC also tied a program record with nine stolen bases, achieving this mark for a second straight day.
Starting pitcher
Aidan Bilder began the game with a scoreless top of the first inning for the Dutchmen (11-16), picking up two strikeouts in the process. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, taking a 10-0 lead over the Chargers (10-12). The club quickly loaded the bases before
Spencer Butz and
Tyler Satterfield each walked with the bases full, plating
Owen Berry and
Daniel Palmieri, respectively.
John Teehan then came through with a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the first, knocking in
Kody Phillips.
Jarred Baer also hit a two-run single to center, driving in Butz and Satterfield.
Adam Jirik followed this with an RBI single through the right side, bringing in
Colby Bealing. The team then scored on a play where Jirik stole second base before advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and Baer stole home. Later in the frame, Butz delivered a two-run double to left-center, bringing home Jirik and Berry. Teehan capped off the big inning with an RBI single to center, scoring Phillips.
Lancaster Bible countered with a solo home run in the top of the second, narrowing the score to 10-1. The Flying Dutchmen responded with a run in the bottom of the second, taking an 11-1 advantage. Jirik reached base on a fielder's choice to shortstop and advanced to third base due to a throwing error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. Palmieri then hit an RBI single to right-center field, plating Jirik. The Chargers later scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third inning, making it an 11-2 contest.
Lebanon Valley added five runs in the bottom of the third, extending its lead to 16-2.
Luca Santoro led off the frame with a solo home run down the left-field line, putting the team up by 10. Jirik later came up to the plate with runners on first and second base with two outs, and the junior came through with an RBI double to center field to bring home Satterfield. Berry then hit a two-run single to left field, driving in Baer and Jirik. Phillips also hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Berry. Bilder followed this by pitching a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning, logging a popout to Berry at shortstop, a flyout to Santoro in center field, and a flyout that Teehan caught in center.
The Chargers crossed the plate three times in the top of the fifth inning, trimming their deficit to 16-5 with an RBI double, an RBI groundout, and an RBI single. The Dutchmen answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, going up 18-5.
Will Plappert got things started by driving a solo homer over the left-center field wall with one out.
Trey Merritt then drew a walk and advanced to second base on a groundout before scoring on Santoro's RBI single to center.
Jack Johnson entered the game to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the top of the sixth inning and blanked the opposition. The first-year recorded a pair of strikeouts for the last two outs of the frame, leaving runners on first and second base. In the bottom of the sixth, the Flying Dutchmen tacked on a run to claim a 19-5 lead. The club loaded the bases with two-out walks by Jirik, Plappert, and Merritt. Phillips then hit an RBI single to right field, plating Jirik.
Sam Forry followed this by closing out LVC's run-rule victory with a scoreless top of the seventh inning, notching the third out with a flyout that Teehan caught in left field to strand a run at third.
Inside the Box Score
- Berry picked up a hit, tied a game-high and season-high two walks, and scored three runs. The senior recorded his 100th career run scored in the bottom of the first inning and later brought his career total to 102 runs scored. Additionally, Berry tied a game-high two stolen bases.
- Santoro tied a game-high two hits with the first two hits of his career, and he recorded his first hit with his first career home run. The first-year also tallied the first two RBIs of his career, while stealing a base.
- Plappert hit his first career home run and drew a walk.
- Jirik tied a game-high and career-high two hits, drove in a season-high two runs, and scored a game-high and career-high four runs. The junior also walked once and registered his first career stolen base.
- Baer logged the first two hits, RBIs, runs scored, and stolen bases of his career. The first-year tied game-highs in hits and stolen bases. Baer also walked for the first time in his career.
- Phillips matched a game-high two hits, tied a game-high and season-high two walks, drove in two runs, and scored two runs.
- Butz hit a double, drew a walk, knocked in a game-high three runs, and scored a run.
- Teehan tied a game-high and season-high two hits and had a season-high two RBIs.
- Palmieri tied a game-high and season-high two hits, while driving in a run, scoring a run, and stealing a base. The first-year also reached base on a hit-by-pitch.
- Merritt registered the first two walks of his career and scored a run for the first time in his career. The first-year also tied a game-high in walks.
- Satterfield had a walk, a hit-by-pitch, an RBI, and a season-high two runs scored.
- Bealing drew a walk and scored a run. The first-year also stole a base for the first time in his career.
- Parker Tarnoci walked once.
- The Dutchmen tied a single-game program record with nine stolen bases as a team, which the club set in yesterday's 9-5 victory over Stevenson University.
- Lebanon Valley outhit Lancaster Bible 15-10.
- LVC tallied a season-high 13 walks.
- Bilder earned his first win of the season, tying a career-high and setting a game-high with three strikeouts.
- Johnson tallied the first two strikeouts of his career during a scoreless inning of relief.
- Forry picked up the first strikeout of his career during a scoreless frame.
