HAVERFORD, Pa. – Seven players drove in at least one run for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team, as the program dropped a 25-9 decision to Haverford College on Monday, March 23, at Kannerstein Field.
Parker Tarnoci led LVC with three RBIs, while
Will Plappert also knocked in a run and led the team with three runs scored. The game was called after the top of the sixth inning due to darkness.
The Dutchmen got their offense rolling in the top of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead over the Fords. The club quickly had runners on second and third base with no outs, as
Owen Berry and
Kenny Palmieri each drew a walk before executing a double steal.
Lucien Burger then hit an RBI single to center field, knocking in Berry. Plappert later drew a walk with the bases loaded, plating Palmieri.
Jacob Williams also came through with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Burger. Haverford countered with back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the first, trimming its deficit to 3-2.
The Fords added seven runs in the bottom of the second, taking a 9-3 advantage on a grand slam, an RBI triple, a wild pitch, and a walk with the bases full. Lebanon Valley responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third, narrowing the score to 9-5. The program loaded the bases with a single up the middle by Plappert and two-out walks by Tarnoci and
Matthew Kendall.
Dylan Mennillo then drew a walk with bases full, bringing in Plappert. Berry was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Tarnoci to cross the plate.
Aidan Attivo followed this by pitching a scoreless bottom of the third for LVC, retiring the side in order with a popout to Williams in center field, a strikeout swinging, and a flyout to Palmieri in right field. The Flying Dutchmen continued to compete in the batter's box in the top of the fourth inning, making it a 9-7 game. The team started the rally when
Kody Phillips and Plappert each reached base with walks, before the runners advanced to second and third base on a wild pitch. Tarnoci then hit a two-run single down the left-field line with two outs, driving in Phillips and Plappert. In the bottom of the fourth, Haverford hit a solo home run and an RBI single to extend its lead to 11-7.
Lebanon Valley kept working to generate traffic on the bases in the top of the fifth inning, as Berry hit a leadoff single to right field and Palmieri attempted a sacrifice bunt and reached base on a fielding error by the pitcher. The Fords then scored 14 runs in the bottom of the fifth, advancing the score 25-7 during a frame that included three RBI singles and two grand slams.
The Dutchmen continued to battle at the plate in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to make it a 25-9 contest. Plappert got things started with a single to shortstop before advancing to second on a wild pitch and stealing third base. Tarnoci then hit an RBI single up the middle, plating Plappert.
Luca Santoro and
John Teehan followed this by reaching on hit-by-pitches, loading the bases.
Trey Merritt also got on base on a fielding error by the second baseman, which allowed Tarnoci to score. This would stand as the final score, as the game was called after the top of the sixth due to darkness.
