Dutchmen Baseball Battles Arcadia in Series Opener

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Kenny Palmieri reached base three times, stole two bases, and scored two runs for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team, as the program dropped a hard-fought 6-5 game to Arcadia University in six innings on Friday, March 20, at McGill Field. The contest was called after the bottom of the sixth due to rain.

Trey Dianna started on the mound for the Dutchmen (6-7, 3-1 MAC Freedom) and began the game with a scoreless top of the first inning. The junior got out of the frame by fielding a groundout himself for the third out, stranding a runner at second base. The Knights (7-6, 3-1 MAC Freedom) then opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run. Lebanon Valley countered with a run in the bottom of the second, narrowing its deficit to 2-1. Palmieri started the rally by drawing a walk and stealing second base, before Matthew Kendall hit a single to first base to put runners on the corners with two outs. This was followed by LVC executing a double steal, in which Kendall swiped second base and Palmieri stole home.

Dianna tossed a shutout frame for the Flying Dutchmen in the top of the third inning. The club notched the final two outs with a double play in which shortstop Owen Berry caught a line drive and threw to first base before the runner could return to the bag. Lebanon Valley crossed the plate again in the bottom half of the third, tying the game at 2-2. Berry got on base by hitting a ball to shortstop and reaching on a fielder's choice, before advancing to third base on a wild pitch and a groundout. Berry then came home to score on another wild pitch.

Arcadia responded with an RBI single in the top of the fourth, taking a 3-2 advantage. LVC continued to compete in the batter's box in the bottom of the fourth, as Palmieri drew a walk while Tyler Satterfield reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. The Knights then tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth inning, going up 6-2 on a solo home run, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single. The Dutchmen later created some more traffic on the bases in the bottom of the fifth, as Berry walked and Spencer Butz hit a single through the left side with two outs.

Parker Raham pitched a scoreless inning for Lebanon Valley in the top of the sixth inning, striking out the final two batters to leave a runner at first base. The Dutchmen also kept battling at the plate in the bottom of the sixth, narrowing the score to 6-5. The club loaded the bases on a double to right-center field by Palmieri, a single to shortstop by Satterfield, and a two-out walk for Will Plappert. A wild pitch then allowed Palmieri to score, while Plappert and Satterfield moved up to second and third base, respectively. Dylan Mennillo followed this by lining a clutch two-run single to center field, knocking in Satterfield and Plappert. This would stand as the final score, as the game was called after the end of the sixth inning due to rain.
