HERSHEY, Pa. – Mallory Burdick and
Brysha Schmidt each scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team in the first period, helping lead the program to a big 3-1 victory over Hood College Friday, Feb. 6 at Hersheypark Arena.
The Dutchmen (14-6-0, 11-5-0 MAC) began a power play 57 seconds into the first period, which led to
Addison Taylert putting two shots on goal that were saved. Lebanon Valley's offense followed this with another attempt by Taylert that was saved at the 4:38 mark, before
Amy McKeigue and
McKayla Romano each had a try saved within five seconds in the sixth minute. The Blazers (12-7-2, 8-7-2 MAC) countered with two shots within 12 seconds in the seventh minute, and LVC answered with two saves by goaltender
Mia Frisoni. Hood later started a power play in the 11th minute, and Frisoni posted two more stops for the Flying Dutchmen during a successful penalty kill.
Lebanon Valley opened the scoring 16:18 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. The program struck first when Burdick sent the puck past the goaltender, courtesy of assists by
Leela Nemani and
Addi Alaoui. The Dutchmen quickly found the net again, 17:28 into the contest, claiming a 2-0 advantage. The squad went up by two when Schmidt scored a goal, following assists by
Lauren Pennino and
Anna Dale. The Blazers responded with a shot on goal at the 17:50 mark, which was saved by Frisoni.
The programs went back and forth defensively early in the second period, as each team had three shots saved during the first four minutes of the frame. The Blazers then started a power play in the sixth minute, and LVC came through with three saves by Frisoni and a block by Dale during another successful penalty kill. The Flying Dutchmen later began a 5-on-3 power play in the 10th minute, leading to
Tiffany Anderson, Alaoui, Nemani, and Taylert each taking a shot that was saved during this stretch.
Romano and
Abby Mak also put a shot on target each for Lebanon Valley during a 5-on-4 power play, and these attempts were saved within seven seconds in the 12th minute. The Dutchmen followed this by tallying five more shots on goal during the rest of the second period. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni registered a pair of stops within 11 seconds in the 17th minute. Hood also started a power play with 35 seconds to go, and Frisoni logged a stop for LVC at the 19:37 mark.
Lebanon Valley concluded another successful penalty kill during the first 1:11 of the third period, which Dale contributed to with a block. The Dutchmen then scored again, 3:44 into the frame, extending their lead to 3-0. The program recorded its third goal when Dale sent the puck into the back of the net, after an assist by
Camryn Crouch. The Blazers later began a power play in the eighth minute and put a point on the board at the 8:36 mark, narrowing their deficit to 3-1 on a power-play goal by Emily Cross.
The Flying Dutchmen remained aggressive offensively as the third period went on, putting nine shots on goal that were saved over the next 4:43. The squad took four of these shots during a power play that started in the 13th minute, prompting Dale to register two attempts while Pennino and Mak each had a try as well. Hood countered with a shot on target at the 15:37 mark, and Frisoni posted a save for LVC. The Blazers later pulled their goalie in the 18th minute and started a power play with 1:31 remaining, causing the team to have a 6-on-4 advantage in skaters. Frisoni then delivered key saves for Lebanon Valley at the 18:40 and 19:33 marks, helping secure the program's 3-1 win.
