Men’s Soccer Defeats Misericordia in MAC Freedom Opener

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Will Burton and Gavin Rapp each scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team in the second half, leading the program to a 2-1 victory over Misericordia University in its Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Herbert Field.

The Dutchmen (7-2-1, 1-0-0 MAC Freedom) worked to generate offensive opportunities early in the game, outshooting the Cougars (3-6-1, 0-1-0 MAC Freedom) 5-1 during the first 19:50. Burton took four of these shots for LVC, while Ben Ammon also registered an attempt. During this stretch, goalkeeper Isaac Yerger delivered a save for Lebanon Valley as well. The programs proceeded to go back and forth defensively, as neither squad took another shot for nearly nine minutes.

Misericordia took a shot at the 28:43 mark, which went to the left of the net. The Flying Dutchmen countered with some more scoring chances, as Ammon, Brayden Burkhardt and Rapp each logged a shot over the next 4:07. The Cougars followed this with a shot on target at the 34:53 mark, and LVC answered with a stop by Yerger. Lebanon Valley then recorded one more shot before the end of the first stanza, as Rapp had a try saved at the 39:44 mark. The teams entered halftime in a 0-0 tie.

LVC remained aggressive offensively when the second half got underway, as Burton took three shots with one attempt on goal and Nathan Kimball had a try go to the left of the net during the first 7:48. The Dutchmen then opened the scoring 53:59 into the contest, taking a 1-0 lead. The program got on the board when Rapp sent a header shot into the lower-left corner of the net for a goal, courtesy of an assist by Ollie Lynch.

Lebanon Valley found the net again at the 62:07 mark, taking a 2-0 advantage. The squad went up by two when Burton took a shot from the right corner of the penalty box and sent the ball into the lower-left corner of the net for an unassisted goal. LVC's defense also kept working to limit the opposition as the second stanza went on, blocking two of Misericordia's four shot attempts over the next 23:13. The Cougars then got on the scoreboard at the 85:48 mark, narrowing their deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick goal by Brody Eisenhart. This would stand as the final score, as the Dutchmen preserved their one-goal lead through the remainder of play.
