Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Dutchmen Women’s Ice Hockey Battles Tough at Arcadia

COLMAR, Pa. ­­ Leela Nemani, McKayla Romano, and Addison Taylert each scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, as the program dropped a 6-3 contest to Arcadia University on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Hatfield Ice Arena.

The Dutchmen (13-6-0, 10-5-0 MAC) took the first shot of the game, as Lauren Pennino logged an attempt that was saved 21 seconds into the first period. The Knights (14-4-2, 12-3-1 MAC) countered with three shots on goal over the next 2:45, and goaltender Mia Frisoni responded with saves on each attempt. Arcadia then scored on a goal by Rheya Zemlak at the 3:22 mark and a goal by Carys Jelley at the 4:00 mark, taking a 2-0 lead. Lebanon Valley also generated some offensive opportunities during the frame, as Allison Guyer put a shot on target that was saved at the 4:24 mark, and Abby Mak had a try saved at the 7:25 mark. 

The Knights added another tally 8:45 into the first period, taking a 3-0 advantage on a goal by Phoebe Roberts. The Flying Dutchmen also kept working to create scoring chances, as Addi Alaoui took a shot that was saved at the 10:15 mark. The programs proceeded to go back and forth defensively for over four minutes, as neither squad recorded a shot on goal until Frisoni posted a save for LVC at the 14:37 mark. The goaltender also delivered five more stops over the next 2:49. Lebanon Valley's offense followed this with a shot on target each by Tiffany Anderson and Anna Dale, within eight seconds in the 18th minute. Before the conclusion of the period, LVC also registered a block by Laura Radford and a save by Frisoni during the final minute.

Lebanon Valley continued to send the puck toward the net when the second period began, as Taylert and Dale each had a shot saved within three seconds in the first minute. Arcadia followed this with three shots on goal during the next 1:37, and goaltender Savannah Alexander answered with three saves for LVC. The Knights later started a power play in the fourth minute and scored on a power-play goal by Haylee Kos at the 4:46 mark, making it a 4-0 contest. The Dutchmen also worked to create chances on the offensive end, tallying seven shots on target over the next 7:31. During this stretch, Alaoui and Anderson each had two attempts. 

Lebanon Valley got on the board 12:20 into the second period, narrowing the score to 4-1. Nemani netted the program's first goal of the day, courtesy of assists by Camryn Crouch and Norah McCauliffe. Arcadia followed this with a power-play goal by Chloe Makinson at the 12:58 mark, taking a 5-1 lead. Back on the defensive end, Alexander made five more saves while McCauliffe, Alaoui, and Dale each blocked a shot for the Flying Dutchmen during the remainder of the frame. Pennino also took another shot for LVC during this stretch, recording an attempt that was saved at the 17:36 mark. 

The Dutchmen kept sending the puck toward the goalie when the third period got underway, taking six shots that were saved during the first 6:49. Pennino, Romano, and Nemani accounted for three of these attempts during a power play that started in the sixth minute. Lebanon Valley capitalized on the 5-on-4 advantage at the 6:56 mark, making it a 5-2 game. The squad trimmed its deficit with a power-play goal by Romano, after assists by Dale and Nemani. The Knights later found the net at the 8:31 mark, going up 6-2 on a goal by Makinson. 

The Flying Dutchmen responded by putting another tally on the board 9:33 into the third period, narrowing the score to 6-3. The team's third goal of the afternoon was recorded by Taylert, following assists from Mak and Anderson. Arcadia then went on a power play in the 11th minute, but LVC came through with a block by McCauliffe and two saves by Alexander during a successful penalty kill. Lebanon Valley also started a power play in the 13th minute, which led to Romano, Anderson, and Mak each putting a shot on goal that was saved. Alexander proceeded to make 11 more saves for the Dutchmen during the remaining minutes, including two stops during another successful penalty kill. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the contest. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Romano netted her ninth goal of the campaign, which marked her first career power-play goal. The first-year also led the team with five shots on goal, won seven faceoffs, and blocked one shot.
  • Nemani found the net for the ninth time this season while tallying her seventh assist of the winter on Romano's goal. The sophomore also won four faceoffs.
  • Taylert scored her team-leading 14th goal of the year. 
  • Crouch recorded her third assist of the campaign on Nemani's goal. 
  • Anderson dished out her 12th assist of the winter on Taylert's goal. The senior also led the program with 11 faceoff wins. 
  • Dale logged her team-leading 13th assist of the season on Romano's goal, marking the junior's fifth consecutive game with at least one point. Dale also blocked two shots on the defensive end. 
  • Mak registered her 11th assist of the year on Taylert's goal. 
  • McCauliffe recorded her sixth assist of the winter on Nemani's goal. The junior tallied a game-high and career-high seven blocks. 
  • Alaoui posted a season-high three blocks on the defensive end. 
  • Alexander tallied a game-high and season-high 31 saves. 
  • Frisoni made 14 saves.
  • Lebanon Valley recorded 30 shots on goal.
  • The Flying Dutchmen had a 19-16 advantage in blocked shots. 
  • Pennino also set a season-high with four blocks. 
  • LVC logged 23 faceoff victories.

The Flying Dutchmen will return to the ice on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., when the team will host Hood College for its Hidden Opponent Awareness Game at Hersheypark Arena.
