Alexander Records 25 Saves for Women’s Ice Hockey at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. ­­Goaltender Savannah Alexander tied a season-high 25 saves for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, as the program battled valiantly while dropping a hard-fought 1-0 contest to Trine University on Saturday, Jan. 3 at Thunder Ice Arena.

The Thunder (4-8-1, 1-6-1 NCHA) generated a pair of offensive opportunities during the opening 46 seconds of the first period, and the Dutchmen (10-4-0, 7-3-0 MAC) answered with two saves by Alexander. Lebanon Valley followed this by putting 12 shots on goal over the next 10:09, including five attempts by Anna Dale. Defensively, Alexander also came through with two saves during this stretch. Each team was then charged with a penalty in the 12th minute, which led to Camryn Crouch and McKayla Romano each putting a shot on goal in the 13th minute, while both squads had four skaters on the ice.

The Flying Dutchmen also began a power play in the 16th minute of the first period, which resulted in a shot on target by Tiffany Anderson that was saved, and two attempts by Dale that were saved. Trine then started a power play in the 18th minute, and Lebanon Valley responded with blocks by Dale and Laura Radford, as well as two saves by Alexander during a successful penalty kill. This was followed by LVC tallying the last two shots of the first frame, which were saved toward the end of the final minute.

The Thunder began the second period on a power play, and Alexander posted a save for the Dutchmen 3:09 into the frame. Trine then got on the scoreboard 3:57 into the period, taking a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Faith Jordan. The programs returned to even strength five minutes into the second, and proceeded to go back and forth by registering three shots each over the next 8:14. Lebanon Valley also kept sending the puck toward the net as the period progressed, as Allison Guyer took a shot that was saved at the 13:22 mark before Radford's try was saved three seconds later.

Alexander continued to battle as well, recording a save for the Flying Dutchmen 13:42 into the second period. This was followed by more scoring chances for Lebanon Valley, as Maeghan Howson put a shot on goal that was saved at the 14:24 mark, and Anderson had an attempt saved at the 16:29 mark. Alexander then delivered a save for LVC at the 17:34 mark, before logging two stops within 24 seconds in the 19th minute. The Dutchmen later took the last two shots of the second frame, as Sophia Scatena and Brysha Schmidt each had a try saved within a second in the last minute.

Lebanon Valley concluded a power play during the first 1:23 of the third period, which led to Dale putting two shots on target that were saved, while Anderson and Howson each had an attempt saved. After the Flying Dutchmen tallied four more shots that were saved over the next 1:18, the program began another power play in the fourth minute and took three shots that were saved during the next two minutes. LVC outshot Trine 13-0 during the first 6:03 of the third frame. The Thunder then sent the puck toward the net at the 6:49 mark, which resulted in Alexander making a save for the Dutchmen.

Lebanon Valley kept competing offensively as the third period went on, registering three shots that were saved over the next 6:15. Trine then began a power play in the 14th minute, and the Flying Dutchmen came through with two blocks by Dale and a stop by Alexander during a successful penalty kill. LVC also kept working to limit the opposition as the end of the period approached, as Abby Mak blocked a shot at the 15:56 mark before Alexander recorded six saves during the next 2:43. The Dutchmen countered with a shot on target by Schmidt at the 19:06 mark, which was saved. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the game.

The Flying Dutchmen will return to action on Friday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m., when the team will host King's College for the first of two matchups next weekend at Hersheypark Arena.
