HERSHEY, Pa. – McKayla Romano and
Addison Taylert each scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team in the third period, helping the program secure a 3-1 victory over Stevenson University on Friday, Jan. 23 at Hersheypark Arena.
Tiffany Anderson also netted a goal for LVC during the win.
The programs competed defensively early in the contest, as neither squad took a shot until goaltender
Mia Frisoni made three saves for the Dutchmen (13-4-0, 10-3-0 MAC) within nine seconds in the third minute.
Allison Guyer then generated an offensive opportunity for Lebanon Valley, putting a shot on goal that was saved at the 4:28 mark. The Mustangs (2-14-1, 2-10-1 MAC) followed this with more shots, but Frisoni responded with five saves for LVC over the next 4:29. The Flying Dutchmen also continued to send the puck toward the net, as Anderson, Guyer, and
Sky Campanile each logged an attempt that was saved during this stretch.
Stevenson began a power play in the 11th minute of the opening period, and Lebanon Valley answered with a block by
Camryn Crouch while keeping the opposition from putting a shot on target during a successful penalty kill. The Dutchmen then created some more scoring chances, as Anderson,
Lauren Pennino, and Dale each put a shot on goal during an eight-second stretch that started toward the end of the 13th minute. This was followed by the squads going back and forth, as each team had two shots saved over the next 3:19. LVC later began a power play with just under two minutes left in the frame, which led to Pennino and Taylert both taking a shot that was saved during this span.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the second period, taking a 1-0 lead. The program put a tally on the board when Anderson sent a puck into the back of the net for a goal, courtesy of assists by Taylert and
Abby Mak. After each team had two more shots on target saved, the Mustangs started a power play in the fifth minute. Lebanon Valley responded with a successful penalty kill, in which Frisoni tallied two stops, and
Norah McCauliffe blocked a shot attempt by Stevenson.
This was followed by the programs battling on the defensive end, as LVC had three shots saved while Frisoni saved two attempts by the Mustangs during the 6:55 after the end of the power play. The Flying Dutchmen then began a power play in the 15th minute of the second period, and Frisoni made two more saves in this stretch. Lebanon Valley's offense also later recorded the last two shots on goal of the frame, as Crouch and Dale both had a shot saved within 11 seconds in the last minute of the frame.
The Dutchmen were aggressive offensively at the start of the third period, registering seven shots on goal that were saved during the first 4:53. Defensively, Frisoni made two saves for LVC during this stretch. Lebanon Valley then began a power play in the sixth minute, which led to Dale sending a shot toward the net that was saved at the 5:49 mark. The Flying Dutchmen later scored again 8:23 into the third, taking a 2-0 advantage. The team went ahead by two when Romano netted a goal, following assists by
Brysha Schmidt and
Amy McKeigue.
The Mustangs countered with four shots over the next 2:12, and Frisoni saved each of these attempts for the Dutchmen. Stevenson then got on the board 11:40 into the third period, narrowing its deficit to 2-1 on a power-play goal by Kira Otto. Later, penalties charged to both programs prompted the teams to play 4-on-4 hockey for a little over a minute, and Frisoni recorded five saves for LVC during this span.
The Flying Dutchmen also kept working to create offensive opportunities as the end of the frame approached, sending four shots toward the goaltender that were saved during a stretch of 1:06 that began in the 18th minute. Lebanon Valley then started a power play in the 19th minute, while Stevenson opted to pull its goalie to have five skaters on the ice. The Mustangs attempted to tie the game with a shot on target with 43 seconds to go, but Frisoni made a big save for LVC. The Dutchmen then secured the 3-1 victory when Taylert scored an empty-net, power-play goal with just 4.1 seconds remaining. Dale was credited with an assist on the final goal of the evening.
