GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Lebanon Valley field hockey junior
Ella Weidenhammer had double-digit saves for the third time in her career with 10 as the Dutchmen dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision at Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon in Gettysburg.
The Bullets (2-1) scored very late in the first quarter for the only goal of the game on Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. It marks the second straight meeting the Dutchmen (2-1) have dropped a 1-0 decision to Gettysburg with the last meeting coming in 2023 at Arnold Field.
The teams traded penalty corners in the first couple minutes of the game. The Dutchmen denied the Bullets a shot at one end of the field and then
Gracie Johnson took the first shot of the game at the other end which was saved. Gettysburg sent a shot wide in the eighth minute before Weidenhammer made back-to-back saves in the 14th minute. The Bullets were awarded a penalty corner in the closing seconds of the quarter and got a shot off that was saved by Weidenhammer. Gettysburg got the rebound and were able to put the second attempt into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
The hosts earned another penalty corner five minutes into the second quarter. Weidenhammer made another big save before a second corner was awarded. The Dutchmen didn't allow a shot on the second attempt and held the Bullets from another shot for almost nine minutes. Gettysburg put together another last-minute attack right before the half as LVC blocked a shot and then Weidenhammer saved the rebound attempt. The Dutchmen pushed the ball up the field quickly as
Jillian Tait sent a shot wide on the final play of the half.
Gettysburg continued their stingy defensive effort in the third quarter as they held the Dutchmen without a shot during the period. LVC did earn a pair of penalty corners in the 39th minute but were unable to get a shot off on either. The Bullets were able to get two shots on goal early in the quarter as Weidenhammer added to her save total and kept the deficit to one.
The fourth quarter began with a strong attack by the Bullets where Weidenhammer was called into action for three saves in the first three minutes. LVC's defense withstood the early attack and started to gain momentum the other way as they looked for the tying goal. The Dutchmen had a great opportunity in the 56th minute as
Danika Setlock fired in a shot off a penalty corner that was just kept out by the keeper. The Dutchmen were able to get another penalty corner out of the traffic in front of cage but could not capitalize with a shot. The Bullets held the Dutchmen without a shot over the final four minutes to close out the game.
Inside the Box
- Weidenhammer was two saves off her career-high with 10 save while facing 13 total shots. The junior also had 10 saves at William Smith last fall.
- The Dutchmen earned five penalty corners in the game. They have earned at least five corners in all three games this season.
- Johnson and Setlock had a shot on goal each while Tait recorded one total shot.

The Dutchmen will look to rebound from the first defeat of the year on Wednesday Sept. 10 as they make the short trip to Middletown for the first time where they will take on Penn State Harrisburg at 3:30 p.m.
