Lane Tallies Third Goal of Year at Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Rebecca Lane tallied her third goal of the season as the Lebanon Valley field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision after a shootout to host Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon in Middletown.

The Dutchmen (2-2) and Lions (3-1) battled up and down the field all afternoon in a tightly contested affair. Both teams came out swinging with a shot on goal that was saved over the course of the first six minutes. The Dutchmen scored first in the 11th minute off a penalty corner as Abby Rodenberger sent a pass from the left side into the front of the cage, where Lane was waiting to knock it in. LVC looked to increase the lead a couple minutes later but a shot from Joanna Ehrhart just sailed wide. The Lions had an opportunity in the final minute of the quarter as Ella Weidenhammer made a save on a shot to keep the Dutchmen ahead.

Harrisburg fought hard to get the tying goal in the second quarter, earning a pair of corners over the first three minutes. Weidenhammer made a save on a shot before the Lions were able to score to even things up late in the 18th minute off the second corner. The teams battled over the course of the final 10 minutes of the half with Harrisburg only attempting one shot that Weidenhammer knocked away.

Jillian Tait began the third quarter with a shot that was saved in the opening minute. The Lions countered at the other end with a shot that Weidenhammer kept out of the cage. The Dutchmen had a flurry of offensive chances late in the quarter as Lauren Foster had a shot saved and Lane's rebound went wide. LVC earned two corners in the final 30 seconds but were unable to get a shot off on either.

The intense play continued into the fourth with neither team able to score with shots at a premium. Harrisburg took the only three shots of the quarter, which were all saved by Weidenhammer. The Dutchmen earned a corner in the 52nd minute but were unable to get a shot off. LVC came out strong to begin the first overtime period as Claire Weidenhammer just missed on a shot that was saved in the 63rd minute. LVC did not allow the Lions to take a shot during the two overtime sessions, while Lane took two shots in the second period. She put a shot wide in the 72nd minute and then had a shot saved in the closing minute. The Lions made their first attempt in the shootout while LVC was unable to score on all four of their attempts.
