Field Hockey Battles Tough in Overtime Thriller with Dickinson

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley field hockey team put together a gritty performance on Wednesday evening in a tough 1-0 overtime defeat to 20th-ranked Dickinson College on a rainy night at Arnold Field.

LVC (4-4) battled tough against the undefeated Red Devils (8-0) in a defensive showcase. Dickinson entered the game as an offensive power, scoring 3.57 goals per game and averaging 19.6 shots per game. The Dutchmen did an excellent job limiting their chances and held the Red Devils to 15 total shots and just the one overtime goal. Amelia Taube was outstanding on the back line all game, stopping forwards from getting the ball into the circle and disrupting any flow that the Red Devils tried to get into. Ella Weidenhammer was also excellent in goal, making seven saves.

The Red Devils took most of their shots in the first quarter, and they put four shots on goal out of seven. Dickinson earned a penalty corner in the fifth minute. The LVC defense blocked an initial shot attempt, and then the rebound went wide. Weidenhammer came up huge in the 13th minute, knocking away back-to-back shots for a pair of saves. The junior then made two more big saves in the final minute off shots on two penalty corners.

The Dutchmen started to gain some momentum in the second quarter. Gracie Johnson inserted a penalty corner in the 20th minute, and a blast from Danika Setlock at the top of the circle was blocked. The teams battled up and down the field with neither team relenting on the defensive pressure. The Red Devils took the only other shot in the period as Weidenhammer made another nice save in the 25th minute to keep the game scoreless.

Dickinson earned a corner early in the third quarter as Weidenhammer kicked away another shot attempt. The Red Devils had a pair of corners in the 39th minute as the defense blocked a shot on the first corner and then a shot sailed wide on the second. The Dutchmen had an opportunity to score late in the quarter as they earned a corner with 1:05 remaining. However, the Red Devils held the Dutchmen without a shot as the game went to the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a battle between the two teams as the rain started the fall harder. Weidenhammer came up with a couple of big diving stops to keep the game scoreless. The defense held strong, playing a woman down after a card, holding the Devils to just one shot wide on a trio of penalty corners in the 55th minute.

LVC came out firing in the overtime period as Lauren Foster had a shot saved in the 62nd minute, and then two minutes later, Claire Weidenhammer just missed wide. The teams traded shots wide in the 66th and 67th minutes, with Setlock having her attempt just miss the post. The Devils were awarded a corner late in the period and were able to find the back of the cage for the game-winning goal with 1:20 on the clock.
