Kolarek Scores First Goal in Men’s Soccer’s Tie with Rutgers-Camden

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Ben Kolarek scored his first career goal for the Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team, as the program delivered a valiant effort in its 2-2 tie with Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Herbert Field. 

The Scarlet Raptors (3-3-2) took the first two shots of the game, sending an attempt to the left of the net at the 1:48 mark and a try to the right of the net at the 3:33 mark. The Dutchmen (4-1-2) countered with some offensive opportunities, as Nathan Prex took a shot that was blocked, and Harrison Davis put a shot on goal that was saved within 10 seconds in the fifth minute. Charlie Kramer then put a shot on target for LVC 5:47 into the first half, which was saved. Rutgers-Camden followed this with an attempt on goal at the 9:42 mark, which resulted in a save for Lebanon Valley by goalkeeper Ryan Simonette

The Flying Dutchmen opened the scoring 11:11 into the first half, taking a 1-0 lead over the Scarlet Raptors. Nathan Kimball took a corner kick for LVC and sent the ball into the left side of the goal box, and Kolarek then sent a header shot into the right side of the net for a goal. Rutgers-Camden later responded with some scoring chances, putting a shot on goal that Simonette saved at the 14:58 mark before sending another try over the net 15:11 into the contest. The Scarlet Raptors also put attempts on target at the 17:29 and 28:22 marks, and Simonette delivered stops on both shots. The squad also attempted a shot that was blocked by Lebanon Valley's defense 17 seconds after the last save. 

The Dutchmen kept sending the ball toward the net as the opening half progressed, as Ollie Lynch logged a shot that was saved at the 30:06 mark and Gavin Rapp had a try saved 31:13 into the game. Rutgers-Camden then took a shot that went over the upper-right corner of the net at the 34:53 mark, and LVC's defense blocked another attempt by the team at the 38:52 mark. Lebanon Valley later tallied the last shot of the first, as Simon Grimes sent the ball to the left of the net with 15 seconds remaining. The Flying Dutchmen took their one-goal advantage into halftime.

The Scarlet Raptors registered the first shot of the second half, sending the ball to the right of the net just 45 seconds into the stanza. The Dutchmen countered with a try by Will Burton at the 46:11 mark, which went over the top-right corner of the net. Rutgers-Camden then recorded a shot that went to the left of the net 47:57 into the contest, before having an attempt blocked by LVC at the 53:50 mark. Andrew Myers followed this with a shot on goal for Lebanon Valley that was saved at the 54:52 mark. Burton had another try at the 57:33 mark, which went to the right of the net. 

The Flying Dutchmen tallied the next shot 65:44 into the game, as JJ Porter's try was saved. The Scarlet Raptors then got on the scoreboard at the 67:48 mark, tying the game at 1-1 on a goal by Joseph Lodise. Rutgers-Camden followed this with a shot attempt that went above the net at the 70:03 mark. 

The Dutchmen went back in front 71:11 into the contest, taking a 2-1 lead. The scoring play began with an excellent pass by Grimes from the right side to the goal box, and Prex then kicked the ball into the upper-left corner of the net for a goal. The programs proceeded to battle defensively for over seven minutes, until Ethan Groff put a shot on target for LVC that was saved at the 78:15 mark. The Scarlet Raptors later scored again at the 81:06 mark, tying the game at 2-2 on a goal by Nik Grello after a pass from a free kick. 

The Flying Dutchmen kept competing as the end of the second half approached, as Kimball took a shot that went to the left of the net at the 83:42 mark. Rutgers-Camden followed this with a shot that went above the net with just over four minutes to go. Lebanon Valley had the last offensive opportunity of the afternoon, as Prex put a shot on target that was saved at the 86:44 mark. Ultimately, the game concluded in a 2-2 tie. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Kolarek netted his first career goal. 
  • Prex scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The senior has found the net in each of LVC's past five games. Prex also tied game-highs with four shots and two shots on goal. 
  • Kimball assisted Kolarek's goal.
  • Grimes dished out his first career assist on Prex's goal. 
  • Lebanon Valley outshot Rutgers-Camden 19-17 and had a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. 
  • Kramer, Davis, Groff, Myers, Rapp, Porter, and Lynch each put a shot on target.
  • Simonette tied a career-high four saves. 
  • LVC had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Dutchmen will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., when the squad will travel to take on Penn State Harrisburg in Middletown, Pa.
