Volleyball Earns Road Sweep at Penn State Berks

READING, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley volleyball team hit a season-best .222 on Wednesday evening in a dominant 3-0 sweep of host Penn State Berks at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center in Reading. The Dutchmen won by set scores of 25-17, 25-11, and 25-11.
 
LVC (3-7) won the first three points of the match as Libby Lindau was a part of two of the points. The Lions answered right back with the next four points to take the lead. Berks continued their run and were able to take an 8-6 lead. Jasmine Sullivan fed Mattea Penner for a point and then blocked an attack attempt to tie the set up at eight. The teams traded points before the Dutchmen used four straight points with Penner serving to take a 13-10 advantage. The Lions used a 4-1 run to tie the score at 14. Riley Mack started a big run for the Dutchmen with consecutive points. Penner continued the rally with back-to-back points to get LVC to 20. Teaguen Reynolds added a pair of points as the lead grew behind six consecutive points. Penner closed out the set with LVC's final two points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Dutchmen came out swinging in the second set after a block by Jillian Jefferys and Reynolds to begin the set. Sofia Okronley served up an ace, and the Dutchmen scored seven of the first 10 points to go up by four. Casey Levan had an ace to start a run of seven straight points while she was serving and ended the run with a pair of aces to increase the lead to 14-3. Kylie Nagle added a pair of aces as the Dutchmen's advantage grew to 18-4. Penner got the Dutchmen to 20 points before Berks used a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to nine. LVC answered with the final five points of the set to take a 2-0 lead. Penner added an ace as the Dutchmen had eight total aces in the set.
 
The third set began with a Lindau point as the Dutchmen got out to another big lead in the set, winning seven of the first 10 points. The Lions were able to keep the gap at four points before Penner started a five-point run for LVC to give the Dutchmen a big cushion. The lead was 15-7 when Okronley's turn to serve started. She fired up a pair of aces during a five-point streak for the Dutchmen to get to 20 points. The Dutchmen kept up the pressure and were able to close out the set and the match as Lindau put away points 21 and 25 in the set.
 
Inside the Box
  • Penner led the team with 13.0 points on 11 kills and two aces. The outside hitter also had three digs.
  • Lindau added 8.0 points on seven kills and two block assists. The junior hit a season-high .417 with 12 total attacks.
  • Reynolds recorded 6.5 points on four kills, three block assists, and one service ace.
  • Okronley had 13 assists, three service aces, and three digs, while Sullivan added 12 assists, three total blocks, one dig, and one kill.
  • Lyla Arfanella led the team in digs with 13, while Levan had seven.
  • LVC had 13 aces in the match, with Nagle and Levan recording a team-high three each.
  • The Dutchmen had a season-best .222 hitting percentage.
Up Next
Lebanon Valley will return to action on Saturday with a tri-match at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. The Dutchmen will take on Rutgers-Camden at 1 p.m. before facing the host Shorewomen in the final match of the day.
