Men’s Soccer’s Big Victory at Johns Hopkins Notches Grimes’ 200th Win

BALTIMORE, Md. – Ben Ammon and Nathan Prex netted goals for the Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team, leading the program to an exciting 2-1 victory over Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Homewood Field. LVC's third consecutive win also marks the 200th career victory for Head Coach Charlie Grimes

The Dutchmen (4-1-1) and the Blue Jays (2-3-2) went back and forth defensively early in the game, as neither team took a shot for over nine minutes at the start. Lebanon Valley registered the first attempt of the evening, as Prex put a shot on goal that was saved at the 9:13 mark. Johns Hopkins countered with a shot on target 10:25 into the first half, but goalkeeper Ryan Simonette came through with the save for LVC. Simonette also delivered a stop for the squad at the 13:22 mark, while the Flying Dutchmen blocked another attempt by the Blue Jays at the 15:06 mark.

Lebanon Valley opened the scoring 16:32 into the first half, taking a 1-0 lead over Johns Hopkins. Ammon got the program on the board by taking a shot from the middle of the penalty box and sending it into the right side of the net, courtesy of assists by Prex and Will Burton. LVC also kept taking shots as the stanza progressed, as Prex sent a shot over the upper-left corner of the net at the 18:46 mark before putting an attempt on goal that was saved at the 19:59 mark. The Blue Jays responded with a shot on target 21:36 into the contest, which resulted in a save by Simonette.

The Dutchmen added another tally at the 23:20 mark, taking a 2-0 advantage. Ethan Groff began the scoring play with a pass from the right side of the penalty box to Prex on the left side of the goal box. Prex then sent the ball into the lower-left corner of the net for a goal, on a sliding kick. The squads followed this by battling defensively for nearly 11 minutes, as neither side recorded a shot until Johns Hopkins sent the ball over the net at the 34:10 mark. The programs proceeded to deliver more solid defense through the remainder of the first half, as no more shots were taken before the break. Lebanon Valley took its two-goal lead into halftime.

Johns Hopkins tallied the first shot of the second half, and Simonette posted a save for the Dutchmen 3:07 into the stanza. The Blue Jays then got on the scoreboard with a penalty kick goal by Scotty Coleman at the 50:27 mark, narrowing their deficit to 2-1. This was followed by the teams competing defensively for over seven minutes, until Johns Hopkins had a shot blocked by LVC, and took a shot that went to the right of the net, within eight seconds in the 59th minute. Prex then took a shot for the Dutchmen, which went to the left of the net.

Lebanon Valley remained productive on the defensive end as the second half progressed, blocking shot attempts by the Blue Jays at the 74:11 and 79:54 marks.
