Ella Weidenhammer Makes Career-High 13 Saves at William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – Lebanon Valley junior Ella Weidenhammer was a force in the cage for the field hockey team as the goalkeeper made a career-high 13 saves in a heartbreaking 2-1 shootout defeat to William Smith College on Sunday afternoon at McCooey Field in Geneva.

The Dutchmen (3-3) and Herons (4-2) played a high-intensity defensive game over the first half, with the teams combining for seven total shots and the Dutchmen recording the only two shots on goal. LVC earned the first penalty corner of the game in the seventh minute. Abby Rodenberger had her shot attempt blocked after an insertion by Gracie Johnson. The Herons took three shots in the first quarter, with two going wide and the third being blocked. LVC put a lot of pressure on the Herons late in the half as Lilah Shaub had her shot attempt knocked away by the keeper. The Dutchmen kept the ball in the circle and were awarded a penalty corner. Johnson inserted the corner out to the top of the circle. The ball made its way to Rebecca Lane on the wing. Lane sent a pass to an unmarked Johnson in front of the cage, who knocked it in for her first goal of the year. The Dutchmen kept the 1-0 lead through the end of the half.

The second half began with a strong offensive push by the Dutchmen as they earned three straight corners in the opening minutes. The Herons did not allow a shot off any of the corner attempts. Claire Widenhammer nearly increased the lead in the 38th minute with a laser shot that was just kept out of the cage. The Herons were able to tie the score up in the 41st minute off a penalty corner. LVC took the ball downfield after the goal and earned a penalty corner. Rodenberger was able to get a shot off from the corner attempt, but it was blocked. The game went to the fourth quarter tied. Lauren Foster just missed wide on a shot in the 49th minute. The hosts put pressure on the LVC defense late in the quarter with a pair of penalty corners. The Dutchmen blocked a shot off one of the corners, and then Ella Weidenhammer made a great diving save on the rebound attempt to keep things even.

William Smith had the first opportunity to score in overtime as they earned a corner in the 62nd minute. They got a shot on goal during the attempt as Weidenhammer kicked the ball away. Claire Weidenhammer gave the Dutchmen some offensive power and nearly ended the game with four shots in a span of a little over a minute. Her fourth attempt got by the keeper but was just kept out of the cage as a WSC defender stopped the ball from crossing the line. The Herons countered LVC's attack with an offensive flurry of shots that Ella Weidenhammer came up big, making save after save, including multiple diving stops. LVC had a chance late in the first overtime period with a pair of corners, but shots by Joanna Ehrhart and Rodenberger were saved. Neither team was able to score in the second overtime period, with Weidenhammer being a force for the Dutchmen in goal, making five saves and knocking away a few other balls before the Herons had a chance to make a play on them.

William Smith went first in the shootout, and a second attempt slipped just over the line in time. The Herons also had their third attempt to squeeze in right before time expired. LVC was unable to make any of their shots during the shootout.
