ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Claire Weidenhammer scored a pair of goals to lead to Lebanon Valley field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory at Elizabethtown College on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams.
The Dutchmen had a very strong start to the game earning a penalty corner in the second minute of action. Weidenhammer had her first look at goal off the corner putting her shot wide. The junior got another chance a little over 30 seconds later, but her shot was saved by the Blue Jays goalie. LVC kept the pressure on and earned a second penalty corner early in the eighth minute. Once again, they were able to get a shot off, but
Danika Setlock also had her attempt go wide. Two minutes later, Weidenhammer scored the first goal of the year to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead. Elizabethtown responded in the 14th minute as they managed to even the score up on their first shot of the game.
The second quarter was once again dominated in the stat sheet by the Dutchmen as they held Etown without a shot while taking seven of their own. Weidenhammer started the attack in the first minute of the quarter as she had her shot attempt saved. The Dutchmen earned a penalty corner in the 19th minute and Weidenhammer received the ball but had her shot blocked. The Dutchmen earned another corner in the 22nd minute but were unable to get a shot off.
Lauren Foster nearly scored a minute later as her shot was saved. The pressure kept building and LVC earned the third corner of the quarter in the 26th minute.
Gracie Johnson had her shot saved off the corner and then the rebound attempt by Foster was also saved. The Dutchmen earned another corner out of the previous play and once again got a shot off but Setlock's attempt went wide as the Blue Jays were able to keep the game tied going into halftime.
The Blue Jays came out strong in the second half and
Ella Weidenhammer made a pair of saves in the first three minutes to keep the game tied. The Dutchmen attempted to take advantage of a Etown green card, but
Claire Weidenhammer's shot went wide. The host earned their second penalty corner of the quarter in the 42nd minute and were able to put a shot on goal that was knocked away by
Ella Weidenhammer.
Amelia Taube made a great defensive save on the rebound attempt that would have give Elizabethtown the lead. The Dutchmen pushed the ball up the field and Foster took a shot in the final minute of the quarter that was saved.
Neither team was able to get a shot off over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. LVC earned a penalty corner with a little over 10 minutes to go in the game and
Claire Weidenhammer sent a shot wide off the corner. The Dutchmen kept the intensity up as Setlock had a shot blocked and then Taube had a shot saved in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later, with 6:33 remaining on the clock, LVC broke through as
Claire Weidenhammer scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Foster. The Blue Jays pressed for the equalizer and earned a pair of penalty corners but a shot off the first corner was blocked and a shot off the second corner went wide.
Inside the Box
- Claire Weidenhammer scored two goals against Elizabethtown for the second consecutive year in the season opener. She recorded the seventh multi-goal game of her career while increasing her goal total to 24. The junior had a game-high eight shots with four on goal.
- Foster recorded the third assist of her career and took three shots putting them all on goal.
- Ella Weidenhammer made three saves for her 16th career win.
- The Dutchmen held a commanding 17-7 shot advantage including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goals.
- LVC earned seven penalty corners and allowed four.
- Setlock had three shots in her first career game while Jillian Tait, Johnson, and Taube had one shot a piece.
- The Dutchmen won the season opener over Elizabethtown for the fourth consecutive year and have won the past five meetings with the Blue Jays.
