Five-Run Fourth Inning Powers Dutchmen Baseball Past Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, Pa. ­­– Adam Jirik and Jace Fetterman each hit a two-run single during a five-run top of the fourth inning for the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team, leading the program to a dominant 10-1 win over Centenary University on Wednesday, April 9, at Our Diamond of Dreams in Hackettstown, New Jersey. 

The Dutchmen (13-15-1, 7-5 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead over the Cyclones (12-14-1, 4-2 Atlantic East). Fetterman reached base via a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third after a wild pitch and a groundout. Logan Brewer then got LVC on the board with an RBI double to center field, driving in Fetterman. Jaden Click started on the mound for Lebanon Valley and began the outing with a scoreless bottom of the first, notching the final out with a flyout to center fielder Spencer Butz to strand a runner at third base. 

The Flying Dutchmen crossed the plate again in the top of the second inning, going ahead 2-0. Tyler Satterfield led off the frame with a double to left-center field before later coming home when Kenny Palmieri lined an RBI single to right field. Click followed this by posting a zero for LVC in the bottom of the second, registering a strikeout looking, a foul out to Brewer at first base, and a popout to third baseman Carter Enders. Click also blanked Centenary in the bottom of the third, recording the third out when Fetterman threw from behind the plate to Enders at third to catch a runner attempting to steal. 

Lebanon Valley added five runs in the top of the fourth inning, extending its advantage to 7-0. The club loaded the bases with one out, and Jirik came through with a two-run single to right field, knocking in Satterfield and Enders. Fetterman then hit a two-run single to right field, plating Palmieri and Jirik. Later in the frame, Brewer hit an RBI groundout to third base to score Owen Berry. In the bottom half of the fourth, Click continued his strong start with a shutout inning, picking up a strikeout in the process. 

The Dutchmen tacked on another tally in the top of the fifth, going up 8-0. Enders got into scoring position with a double down the left-field line and later scored on Jirik's RBI single back to the pitcher. Michael Williams entered the game to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the bottom of the fifth and logged a scoreless frame. LVC registered the first out of the inning when Fetterman caught a runner attempting to steal second, and the final two outs were made with flyouts. 

Kyle McCracken came out of the bullpen for Lebanon Valley in the bottom of the sixth inning and held the opposition in check, fielding a groundout himself before a lineout to Jirik at second base and a strikeout swinging. The Cyclones then got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, narrowing the score to 8-1 on an RBI single to left field. 

The Flying Dutchmen also continued their productive day in the batter's box in the top of the eighth, advancing their lead to 10-1. Berry drew a walk with one out before promptly scoring on Fetterman's RBI double to left field. Butz followed this by hitting a ball to second base and reaching on an error, allowing Fetterman to cross the plate.
Blair Shaffer came in to pitch for LVC in the bottom of the eighth and retired the side in order with a popout to Berry at shortstop, a flyout to first baseman Devin Kreger, and a groundout that the southpaw fielded himself. Shaffer then secured Lebanon Valley's 10-1 victory with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning, capping off the game by fielding a groundout himself.

  • Lebanon Valley outhit Centenary 13-6.
  • Fetterman tied game-highs and season-highs with three hits and three RBIs while matching a game-high two runs scored. The senior also brought his career RBI total to 100 during the win. Fetterman stole a base and was hit by a pitch as well. Additionally, the catcher threw out two runners attempting to steal. 
  • Jirik had a career-high two hits while setting a career-high and tying a game-high with three RBIs. The sophomore also crossed the plate for the third consecutive game. 
  • Brewer hit a double and drove in two runs. 
  • Palmieri tallied two hits while recording an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. 
  • Berry logged a base hit while tying a game-high two runs scored and walking for the fifth straight contest.
  • Enders registered two hits with a double while scoring twice, which tied a game-high and season-high. 
  • Satterfield hit a double while tying a game-high two runs scored. The junior also drew a walk. 
  • Butz knocked in a run while recording a hit-by-pitch. 
  • Landon Sexton tallied a base hit. 
  • Click struck out a season-high three batters in four scoreless innings of work. 
  • Williams tossed a shutout bottom of the fifth inning. 
  • McCracken tallied a strikeout in a two-inning relief appearance. 
  • Shaffer fanned a batter in two scoreless frames out of the bullpen.

The Dutchmen are scheduled to return to the diamond at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 11, when the club will host King's College at McGill Field to open the weekend series.
