Baseball Wins Fourth Straight Conference Series with Doubleheader Sweep of King’s

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– The Lebanon Valley College Baseball team continued to produce in the batter's box, sweeping its doubleheader against King's College with 12-1 and 12-9 victories on Sunday, April 13, at McGill Field. Logan Brewer drove in six runs for the Flying Dutchmen during the twin bill, while Jace Fetterman and Kody Phillips each homered in the second matchup. 

Game One 
Jacob Detwiler was the starting pitcher for the Dutchmen (14-15-1, 8-5 MAC Freedom) and began the afternoon with a scoreless top of the first inning. The junior limited the Monarchs (10-18, 3-10 MAC Freedom) by recording an unassisted groundout to Brewer at first base, a strikeout swinging, and a groundout that the pitcher fielded himself. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, taking an early 1-0 lead over King's. Owen Berry led off the frame with a walk and moved up to second on a Fetterman hit-by-pitch before advancing to third on a flyout. Brewer followed this with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Berry.

Detwiler posted another zero for LVC in the top of the second, registering another strikeout in the process. King's then got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI single to right-center field. The Flying Dutchmen answered right back with five runs in the bottom of the third, going ahead 6-1. The club loaded the bases with one out, and Brewer came through with an RBI single to right-center field, knocking in Dylan Mennillo. Phillips followed this by lining a two-run single to left-center field, plating Fetterman and Spencer Butz. Tyler Satterfield kept the rally going with an RBI groundout back to the pitcher, scoring Brewer. LVC tallied its fifth run of the frame on a bunt RBI single by Carter Enders, bringing in Phillips. 

Detwiler pitched a shutout top of the fourth for Lebanon Valley, notching the third out with a groundout to Berry up the middle to strand runners on second and third base. The Dutchmen followed this by adding another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 7-1 advantage. Berry reached base on an error and advanced into scoring position with a stolen base. Butz then came to the plate with two outs and hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Berry. In the top of the fifth inning, Detwiler continued his strong outing with a 1-2-3 frame on three groundouts. 

The Flying Dutchmen continued to compete in the batter's box as the contest went into the bottom of the fifth, going up 8-1. Phillips led off the inning with a double to right-center field and was knocked in with an RBI double down the left-field line by Satterfield. Detwiler followed this by retiring the side in order again in the top of the sixth, with a groundout to Berry at shortstop, a groundout to Enders at third base, and a strikeout swinging. 

Lebanon Valley tacked on four more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending its lead to 12-1. Fetterman came up to the plate with a runner on third and reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing Berry to score. Later in the inning, pinch-hitter Kameron Wetzel hit a ball to second base and reached on a throwing error, plating Fetterman and Butz. Kenny Palmieri followed this with an RBI single to shortstop, bringing home Devin Kreger. Blair Shaffer then entered the game to pitch for the Dutchmen in the top of the seventh inning and posted a zero against the Monarchs, securing the club's 12-1 win with a popout to Brewer at first base. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Lebanon Valley outhit King's 7-4. 
  • Phillips tallied a game-high two hits with a double and tied a game-high two RBIs while tying a season-high two runs scored. 
  • Brewer tied a game-high two RBIs while recording a base hit and a run scored. 
  • Satterfield hit a double and tied a game-high two RBIs. 
  • Berry had a game-high two walks and tied a career-high and game-high three runs scored. This marked the junior's third consecutive game with a run scored and his sixth straight with a walk. 
  • Butz registered a hit, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. 
  • Enders picked up a base hit to mark his third consecutive game with a hit. The first-year also drove in a run.
  • Palmieri had a hit, an RBI, and a stolen base. 
  • Fetterman tied a career-high two hit-by-pitches and scored two runs. 
  • Mennillo drew a walk and crossed the plate once. 
  • Kreger also walked and scored a run. 
  • Detwiler earned his third win of the campaign, striking out four batters during six innings on the mound. 
  • Shaffer tallied a strikeout during a scoreless frame of relief. 
Game Two 
Lebanon Valley was considered the visiting team in this matchup, as King's was originally scheduled to host two games during this series. LVC struck first in the top of the first inning, taking an early 2-0 lead over King's. Brewer came up to the plate with runners on second and third base and delivered a two-run single up the middle, plating Berry and Butz. The Monarchs countered with four runs in the bottom of the first, taking a 4-2 advantage on two RBI singles and a two-run double to right-center field. Starting pitcher Hunter Williams then tossed a scoreless bottom of the second inning for the Dutchmen, striking out three batters. 

LVC crossed the plate again in the top of the third inning, narrowing their deficit to 4-3. Butz got things started with a one-out double to left field, and the junior advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Brewer followed this with a sacrifice fly to left-center field, bringing home Butz. Lebanon Valley then blanked King's in the bottom of the third, as Williams recorded a flyout to Butz in left-center field and a flyout to Phillips in left field before reliever Michael Williams tallied third out with a groundout to Mennillo at second base. 

The Flying Dutchmen put four runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning, going up 7-4. Berry came to the plate with runners on second and third with one out and hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Palmieri, while a throwing error by the center fielder also allowed Mennillo to score on the play. Butz later delivered an RBI double to right field, knocking in Fetterman. Brewer followed this with a single to second base, and a throwing error on the play allowed Butz to cross the plate. Williams pitched his first full inning of relief for LVC in the bottom of the fourth, and the graduate student registered a shutout frame with a strikeout. Williams also logged a zero in the bottom of the fifth inning, striking out three batters. 

Lebanon Valley continued its offensive clinic in the top of the sixth, taking a 10-4 lead. Fetterman added the first tally by driving a solo home run over the wall. Later in the frame, Phillips lined a two-run homer over the left-field fence to drive in Brewer. The Monarchs responded with a three-run home run to right-center field in the bottom of the sixth inning, making it a 10-7 game. The Dutchmen got two of these runs back in the top of the seventh inning, claiming a 12-7 advantage. Joey Santora led off with a double down and promptly scored on Mennillo's RBI single to left field. Later in the frame, Brewer hit a sacrifice fly to plate Mennillo. 

King's followed this with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, narrowing the score to 12-9 after a wild pitch and an RBI groundout to second base. Malachi Duka then pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for the Dutchmen, notching the third out of the frame with a strikeout to leave a runner at the corners. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Berry moved from shortstop to the mound and secured Lebanon Valley's 12-9 victory. The junior closed out LVC's doubleheader sweep by keeping the Monarchs off the board, finalizing the win with a groundout to Mennillo at shortstop. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Lebanon Valley clinched the series win against King's by taking the first two matchups. LVC has won its last four series against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opponents. 
  • The Dutchmen outhit the Monarchs 13-9. 
  • Brewer had a game-high three hits to match a season-high while tying a game-high four RBIs. The senior has registered a hit and an RBI in each of his last three games. Brewer also scored a run and stole a base. 
  • Fetterman tallied two hits, including his fourth home run of the year. The senior also scored two runs for the third straight game. Fetterman was hit by a pitch for the third game in a row as well. 
  • Phillips hit his second home run of the season and drove in two runs. The first-year also had a game-high three walks and stole his first career base. 
  • Butz registered a game-high and season-high two doubles while walking, driving in a run for the third consecutive game, and scoring a game-high three runs. The junior's three runs tied a season-high. Butz also stole a base. 
  • Berry recorded a base hit, a walk, and an RBI while scoring a run for the fourth straight game. On the mound, the junior earned his second save of the season by striking out a season-high two batters in a scoreless bottom of the ninth. 
  • Mennillo had two hits with a double to tie a season-high while picking up a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. The first-year's two runs matched a season-high. 
  • Palmieri tallied a base hit to extend his hitting streak to three while crossing the plate once. The junior was also hit by a pitch. 
  • Santora walked, hit a double, and scored a run. 
  • Enders was hit by a pitch. 
  • Michael Williams earned his second win of the year, striking out four batters in 2.1 scoreless innings. 
  • Hunter Williams fanned a game-high five hitters in his start.
  • Duka had three strikeouts without allowing an earned run in two frames on the mound.

Lebanon Valley will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, Monday, April 14, when the program will close out its series against King's with a single game at Lipo Field in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
