Dutchmen Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Five with Victory Over King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Kody Phillips recorded two hits and a game-high three RBIs, helping lead the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team to an 11-7 victory over King's College to secure a series sweep on Monday, April 14, at Lipo Field. Logan Brewer was also a key contributor for the Flying Dutchmen, hitting a home run and driving in two.

The Dutchmen (16-15-1, 10-5 MAC Freedom) struck first with a five-run top of the first inning, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead over the Monarchs (10-20, 3-12 MAC Freedom). The club loaded the bases with no outs, as Owen Berry reached base on an error, Jace Fetterman was hit by a pitch, and Spencer Butz reached on an error. Brewer opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Berry. Phillips followed this with a two-run double to center field, plating Fetterman and Butz. Tyler Satterfield then hit an RBI double down the third-base line, knocking in Phillips. LVC scored its fifth run of the frame when Carter Enders hit a double to left field and reached third base on an error, allowing Satterfield to cross the plate.

Andrew Spaan was Lebanon Valley's starting pitcher and began his outing with a scoreless bottom of the first, tallying a strikeout during the frame. King's then got on the board in the bottom half of the second, trimming its deficit to 5-1 with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Monarchs also added two runs in the bottom of the third inning, making it a 5-3 game on an RBI single down the third-base line and a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Flying Dutchmen responded with three runs in the top of the fourth, going ahead 8-3. Fetterman came up to the plate with runners on second and third base with no outs and delivered an RBI single to right-center field, bringing home Dylan Mennillo. Butz then reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Berry to score from third. Later in the frame, Phillips came through with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Fetterman. In the bottom of the fourth, Blair Shaffer entered the game to pitch for LVC and retired the side in order with a groundout to Mennillo at second base and a pair of strikeouts.

Shaffer also tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning for Lebanon Valley, striking out the first two batters swinging before registering a groundout to Berry at shortstop. The Dutchmen then tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth, going up 11-3. Brewer led off the inning by launching a solo home run over the right-field fence. This was followed by Kenny Palmieri coming up to the plate with the bases loaded with no outs and hitting an RBI single through the left side, knocking in Phillips. Satterfield also scored during the frame on a play where two outs were recorded.

Shaffer continued his strong relief appearance for the Dutchmen in the bottom of the sixth by blanking the opposition, notching the final two outs with a double play.
