Baseball Ties Nationally Ranked Penn State Harrisburg in Offensive Battle

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Owen Berry tied a game-high three RBIs and pitched a scoreless inning of relief, as the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team tied No. 14/17 Penn State Harrisburg in a back-and-forth 12-12 game on Tuesday, March 25, at McGill Field. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.

Malachi Duka was the starting pitcher for the Dutchmen (7-13-1, 2-4 MAC Freedom) and began the afternoon with a scoreless top of the first inning, notching the third out by picking up a ball hit back to the mound and throwing it to first. Duka also blanked the Lions (14-3-1, 2-0 United East) in the top of the second, recording two strikeouts and an unassisted groundout to first base. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring in the bottom half of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. Kody Phillips got on base with a one-out double down the right-field line and later came home to score on a wild pitch.

Penn State Harrisburg countered with three runs in the top of the third inning, taking a 3-1 advantage on an RBI single to left-center field, a sacrifice fly to right field, and a steal of home on a double steal attempt. The Flying Dutchmen responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 3-3. Jace Fetterman came through with an RBI single through the right side, knocking in Kenny Palmieri. Logan Brewer later hit a two-out RBI single through the right side, plating Berry.

Tony Bennage retired the Lions in order in the top of the fourth inning, registering a strikeout looking a groundout to second baseman Dylan Mennillo, and a popout to Berry at shortstop. Lebanon Valley's lineup then posted a big seven-run frame in the bottom of the fourth, going ahead 10-3. Mennillo came to the plate with the bases loaded and reached on an error on a ball hit to third, scoring Tyler Satterfield. Berry followed this by lining a three-run double down the left-field line, driving in Carter Enders, Palmieri, and Mennillo. The club capped off its big inning when Phillips hit a two-run triple to left-center field to bring home Spencer Butz and Brewer before the first-year also crossed the plate on a throwing error.

The Lions responded with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, narrowing the score to 10-7 on a two-run single to left-center field and a two-run double to left-center field. Michael Williams then pitched a shutout top of the sixth for LVC, getting out of the frame with a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play. Penn State Harrisburg later scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, taking an 11-10 lead on an RBI single to left field and a three-run home run to right field.

The Lions added a tally on an RBI unassisted groundout to first base in the top of the eighth, going up 12-10. The Dutchmen continued to battle back in the bottom of the eighth, as the club evened the score at 12-12. Justin Ranker got the rally started with a two-out single up the middle before Enders hit a single back to the pitcher. Palmieri then came through with a clutch two-run single to right-center field, knocking in Ranker and Enders to tie the game. This would stand as the final score, as the contest was called after eight innings.
