Dutchmen Baseball Takes Series Against DeSales Behind Brewer’s Big Day

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. ­­– Logan Brewer launched two home runs and recorded eight RBIs for the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team during its doubleheader against DeSales University, leading the program to a victory in game one while splitting the twin bill on Saturday, March 22, at Weiland Park. The Flying Dutchmen posted a big 14-8 win in the first matchup before dropping a 13-3 decision in eight innings in the second.  

Game One 
The Dutchmen (7-12, 2-3 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking an early 3-0 lead over the Bulldogs (8-6, 3-2 MAC Freedom). The club got things started with a one-out single to center field by Jace Fetterman and a Spencer Butz hit-by-pitch. Brewer then came up to the plate and sent a three-run home run over the right-field wall. DeSales countered with a tally in the bottom of the first, narrowing the score to 3-1 after a run scored on a double play. 

Lebanon Valley's lineup continued to produce in the top of the second inning, adding four more runs to go up 7-1. The program loaded the bases after Dylan Mennillo was hit by a pitch, while Fetterman and Butz each drew a walk. Brewer followed this by launching a grand slam over the fence in right, providing the club with a six-run advantage. Dianna then posted a zero for the Flying Dutchmen in the bottom of the second, picking up a strikeout in the process. The Bulldogs later scored another run in the bottom of the third, making it a 7-2 contest on an RBI groundout to back to the pitcher. 

Dianna kept working to limit the opposition in the bottom of the fourth, registering a shutout frame with a strikeout swinging, a flyout to center field, and a foul out to first base. The Dutchmen then delivered a big five-run inning in the top of the fifth, extending their lead to 12-2. Mennillo came up to the plate with runners on second and third and came through with a two-run single to right field, driving in Kody Phillips and pinch runner Duncan Weir. The club followed this by loading the bases with two outs, leading to Butz's three-run double to right, knocking in Mennillo, Owen Berry, and Fetterman. Dianna proceeded to blank DeSales in the bottom of the fifth, finishing his start with a zero after a foul out to first base, a flyout to center field, and a groundout to shortstop.

Andrew Spaan came in to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the bottom of the sixth inning and pitched a scoreless frame, logging a groundout to second base, a flyout to right field, and a flyout to center field. The Flying Dutchmen then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, making it a 14-2 ballgame. The club scored on bases-loaded walks by Christian Vanelli and Cole Kingsbury, plating Butz and Devin Kreger, respectively. The Bulldogs followed this with six runs in the bottom of the seventh, narrowing the score to 14-8 on a two-run double down the left-field line, a two-run single up the middle, an RBI single to shortstop, and an RBI double to left-center field. Spaan then notched the final out of the seventh with a popout to Mennillo at second, securing LVC's victory.  

Inside the Box Score
  • Lebanon Valley won the series against DeSales. 
  • Brewer delivered a season-high two home runs and set a career-high with seven RBIs, achieving game-highs. The senior two hits also tied for the most in the game. Brewer tied a season-high two runs scored as well. 
  • Butz tied a season-high and game-high two hits while tying a season-high three RBIs. The junior extended his hitting streak to nine in an effort that included a double. He also set a season-high and matched a game-high with three runs scored. Additionally, Butz set a season-high and tied a game-high with two walks. 
  • Mennillo had a hit while tying season-highs with two RBIs and two runs scored.  
  • Fetterman tied a game-high and career-high three runs scored while tallying a hit and tying a game-high and season-high two walks. 
  • Berry tied a game-high two walks and scored a run. This marked the fifth straight game the junior tallied a walk. 
  • Kingsbury picked up the first walk and RBI of his career. 
  • Vanelli registered a walk and an RBI. 
  • Phillips doubled and scored a run. 
  • Kreger and Weir both walked and crossed the plate once. 
  • Justin Ranker had two base hits, tying for the most in the game. 
  • Parker Tarnoci walked once. 
  • LVC tallied four hit-by-pitches. 
  • Dianna earned his first win of the year, striking out four batters in five innings on the mound. 
Game Two 
Lebanon Valley (7-13, 2-4 MAC Freedom) struck first in the top of the first inning, taking an early 2-0 lead over DeSales (9-6, 4-2 MAC Freedom). The program loaded the bases with no outs after Berry was hit by a pitch, Fetterman doubled to right field, and Butz was hit by a pitch. Brewer then drew a walk with the bases full, scoring Berry. Later in the frame, Ranker hit a sacrifice fly to center field to knock in Butz. Hunter Williams started on the mound for the Dutchmen and delivered a scoreless bottom half of the first, recording a groundout to third base, an unassisted groundout to first base, and a flyout to center field. Williams also posted a zero in the bottom of the second, notching the third out of the inning with a strikeout swinging. 

Lebanon Valley added a run in the top of the third inning, extending its advantage to 3-0 on a solo home run to left field by Butz. The Bulldogs responded with three in the bottom half of the third, tying the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly to center field and a two-run home run to right-center field. DeSales also hit a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the fourth and an RBI single to center in the bottom of the fifth, going up 5-3. 

The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning, making it a 7-3 game on a two-run single to right field. The Dutchmen continued to battle in the batter's box as the game went into the top of the seventh, as Berry hit a single to third base while Fetterman drew a walk with two outs. DeSales followed this with a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the seventh, going ahead 8-3. The Bulldogs then scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, winning the game 13-3 on the run rule with an RBI single to center, an RBI walk, a two-run double to right, and an RBI single up the middle. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Butz launched his third home run of the year in a two-hit performance, which ties a season-high and extends his hitting streak to 10 games. The junior also had an RBI and led LVC with two runs scored. Butz has driven in a run in six consecutive games while logging a run scored in his last three contests. 
  • Brewer registered a hit to extend his hitting streak to three while knocking in a run and tying a season-high and game-high two walks. 
  • Ranker had a base hit and an RBI. 
  • Berry tallied a hit, and a run scored. 
  • Fetterman hit a double to extend his hitting streak to six and drew a walk. 
  • Mennillo picked up a base hit. 
  • LVC had two hit-by-pitches. 
  • Williams struck out four batters in his start. 
  • Tony Bennage tallied a strikeout without allowing an earned run in his 50th career appearance, tying the program record for appearances by a pitcher. Tanner Rock also pitched in 50 games for the Dutchmen during his career. 
  • Jordy Polanco struck out a hitter without allowing an earned run.

Lebanon Valley will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, when the club will host Penn State Harrisburg at McGill Field.
