ANNVILLE, Pa. – Spencer Butz blasted a walk-off two-run home run to right-center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, providing the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team with a thrilling 5-4 victory over DeSales University on Friday, March 21, at McGill Field.
Logan Brewer also played an important role in the victory, hitting his first homer of the season.
Jacob Detwiler started on the mound for the Dutchmen (6-12, 1-3 MAC Freedom) and began the ballgame by retiring the side in order, as Butz caught a flyout in left-center field and snagged a lineout in center before the pitcher tallied a strikeout swinging. Lebanon Valley opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs (8-5, 3-1 MAC Freedom).
Owen Berry led off the frame with a single to center field and stole second before Brewer drove a two-run home run into the bullpen beyond the right-field wall. Detwiler also delivered a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, recording a strikeout swinging and a couple of groundouts to Berry at shortstop.
Detwiler posted another zero in the top of the third inning, logging a strikeout swinging, a groundout to Berry, and a strikeout looking. DeSales later got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, narrowing the score to 2-1 on an RBI double down the right-field line. The Flying Dutchmen responded by getting this run back in the bottom half of the fourth, taking a 3-1 advantage. The program put a pair of runners on base with a single up the middle by
Carter Enders and a bunt single back to the pitcher by
Kameron Wetzel, and they moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by
Dylan Mennillo. Berry then hit an RBI groundout to shortstop, knocking in Enders.
The Bulldogs scored again in the top of the fifth inning, trimming their deficit to 3-2 on an error. DeSales then plated two runs in the top of the sixth, going ahead 4-3 on an RBI single to shortstop and a steal of home during a double steal.
Hayden Fravel entered the game to pitch for LVC in the top of the seventh inning and notched a pair of outs, as left fielder
Kody Phillips made a sliding catch on a fly ball before throwing it to Berry, who tossed it to Brewer to make the tag for a double play.
Tony Bennage then secured the third out of the frame with a strikeout swinging. Bennage also pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, registering an unassisted groundout to first base, a groundout to second base, and a groundout to shortstop.
Malachi Duka came out of the bullpen to pitch for the Dutchmen in the top of the ninth inning and blanked the opposition, as catcher
Jace Fetterman threw out a runner attempting to steal second, and Berry fielded a groundout before catching a lineout. In the bottom of the ninth, Lebanon Valley got a runner on base with two outs when Fetterman drew a walk before
Ryan Schulman entered as a pinch runner. Butz then came to the plate and drove the first pitch of the at-bat over the right-center field wall for a two-run walk-off home run, securing the 5-4 win for the Dutchmen.

- Lebanon Valley earned its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory of the season. This marks the club's second walk-off win of the year, as Phillips hit a walk-off two-run single to provide LVC with a 6-5 victory over Kenyon College on March 7 in Fort Pierce, Florida.
- Butz hit his second home run of the season, recording two RBIs and a run scored in the process. The homer extended the junior's hitting streak to eight games. Butz also reached base twice on errors and via a hit-by-pitch.
- Brewer left the yard for the first time this season while tallying a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
- Berry tallied a hit, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. The junior's single in the bottom of the first extended his hitting streak to three games. Berry stole a base for the third consecutive contest as well.
- Schulman scored the game-tying run on Butz's walk-off homer.
- Enders logged a base hit and scored a run.
- Fetterman hit a double to extend his hitting streak to four while drawing a walk. The catcher also threw out a runner attempting to steal second in the top of the ninth inning.
- Wetzel picked up a base hit.
- Phillips drew a walk for the third straight game.
- Lebanon Valley outhit DeSales 6-5.
- Duka improved his record to 2-0 after pitching a shutout top of the ninth.
- Detwiler tied a career-high eight strikeouts in his start on the mound.
- Michael Williams registered a strikeout without allowing an earned run.
- Fravel recorded a pair of outs in a scoreless relief appearance.
- Bennage fanned a batter in 1.1 shutout innings.

Lebanon Valley will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 22, when the program will travel to take on DeSales in a doubleheader at Weiland Park in Center Valley, Pennsylvania. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
