ANNVILLE, Pa. – Spencer Butz hit his first home run of the season and drove in four runs for the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team during its doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 15, at McGill Field. The Flying Dutchmen put together valiant efforts in both matchups of their home opener but ultimately dropped the contests by scores of 7-6 and 5-4.
Game One
The Ducks opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on an RBI single to left-center field and an error. Starting pitcher
Andrew Spaan then delivered zeros in the top of the second and the top of the third innings for the Dutchmen. The senior picked up a strikeout looking for the second out in the top of the third. Stevens followed this with four runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking a 6-0 advantage on a frame that included two RBI doubles to left-center field, an unassisted RBI groundout to first base, and an error.
Lebanon Valley got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, narrowing the score 6-1.
Kody Phillips led off the frame with a walk before
Logan Brewer hit a single through the right side, and the runners later moved up to second and third on a groundout. This was followed by
Carter Enders hitting an RBI groundout to first base, plating Phillips.
Michael Williams then tossed a shutout frame for the Flying Dutchmen in the top of the fifth, logging a flyout to Butz in right-center field, a popout to second baseman
Dylan Mennillo, and a groundout the pitcher fielded himself.
Stevens added a run in the top of the sixth inning, going ahead 7-1 on an RBI single to center field. Lebanon Valley answered back with a big five-run frame in the bottom of the sixth, trimming its deficit to 7-6. The club got runners on second and third base on a single up the middle by
Kameron Wetzel and a double down the left-field line by Enders. Butz came to the plate with two outs and hit an RBI single to third base to score Wetzel, and Enders crossed the plate on an error. Later in the inning,
Jace Fetterman hit an RBI single to right-center field to knock in Butz while
Owen Berry scored on an error. Brewer then drove an RBI double to center field, plating Fetterman.
Landon Sexton entered the contest to pitch for LVC in the top of the seventh and posted a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout swinging, a groundout to shortstop, and a flyout to center field. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the seven-inning game.

- Fetterman picked up two hits, an RBI, a run scored, and a hit-by-pitch. The catcher also threw out a runner attempting to steal third in the top of the fourth.
- Brewer registered two hits with a double and an RBI.
- Butz recorded a base hit, a walk, an RBI, a run scored, and his first stolen base with LVC. The junior extended his hitting streak to five games.
- Phillips had a game-high and season-high three walks while crossing the plate once.
- Enders hit his first career double while picking up an RBI and a run scored.

- Kenny Palmieri had a base hit and a walk.
- Spaan struck out two batters in 3.2 innings.

Game Two
Trey Dianna started on the mound for the Dutchmen and delivered a scoreless top of the first inning, retiring the side in order with a groundout to second base and two strikeouts swinging. Dianna also pitched a 1-2-3 inning against the Ducks in the top of the second with a strikeout looking, a strikeout swinging, and a groundout to second base. Lebanon Valley struck first in the bottom half of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. The club went up by a run when Wetzel reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a groundout, before coming home to score on a two-out RBI single up the middle by
Tyler Satterfield.
Stevens countered with four runs in the top of the third inning, taking a 4-1 advantage on an RBI double to center field, a balk, and a two-run single to left-center field. Dianna then posted a zero in the top of the fourth, stranding runners on second and third with a groundout to second base. The Flying Dutchmen also continued to compete in the batter's box as the contest progressed, as Phillips walked and Brewer singled to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dianna followed this by retiring the Ducks in order in the top of the fifth inning with a lineout to Wetzel at third, a flyout to Butz in center, and a groundout to Wetzel.
Stevens added a run in the top of the sixth inning, going ahead 5-1 on a solo home run to left-center field.
Hayden Fravel came out of the bullpen to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the top of the seventh and registered a shutout frame with a groundout to shortstop, a flyout to right field, and a flyout to left field.
Malachi Duka then delivered a 1-2-3 inning for LVC in the top of the eighth, recording a flyout to Butz in left-center field, a groundout to Mennillo at second, and a groundout to Berry at shortstop. Duka also blanked the opposition in the top of the ninth inning, picking up a strikeout in the process.
The Dutchmen kept battling in the bottom of the ninth inning, crossing the plate three times to make it a 5-4 game. Butz came up to the plate with runners on second and third base and launched a pitch over the left-center field wall for a three-run home run, driving in
Parker Tarnoci and pinch runner
Adam Jirik. Ultimately, Stevens preserved its lead through the end of the game.
