Dutchmen Baseball Takes on SUNY Brockport in Doubleheader

EPHRATA, Pa. ­­– Jace Fetterman recorded two RBIs and got on base five times for the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team during the program's doubleheader against SUNY Brockport on Saturday, March 1, at Ephrata High School's War Memorial Field. The Flying Dutchmen battled tough during the twin bill but dropped the contests by scores of 11-1 and 11-4. Duncan Weir and Ryan Murphy also drove in a run each for LVC. 

Game One
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 6-0 lead on an RBI single to center field, a three-run home run to right-center field, and two RBI singles to left. Hayden Fravel entered the game to pitch for the Dutchmen in the top of the second inning and retired the side in order with a pop out to second base, a strikeout swinging and a flyout to center field. Fravel delivered another shutout frame in the top of the third and got out of a bases-loaded jam by notching the third out with a strikeout. 

Lebanon Valley got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, narrowing the score to 6-1. Kameron Wetzel led off the inning with a single to third base and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Weir then hit a one-out RBI single to right field and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder, driving in Wetzel. SUNY Brockport followed this by crossing the plate twice in the top of the fourth, making it an 8-1 contest on an RBI double down the right-field line and an RBI single to right. 

The Golden Eagles later extended their advantage to 11-1, scoring on a solo homer to right field and an RBI double down the left-field line in the top of the fifth before recording an RBI single to left in the sixth inning. Gaven Schreier came in to pitch for the Flying Dutchmen in the top of the seventh inning and tossed a scoreless frame, logging the third out with a strikeout. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the game. 

Inside the Box Score
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Lebanon Valley and SUNY Brockport. 
  • Weir recorded an RBI and a base hit during the contest. 
  • Wetzel recorded a hit, a run scored, and a stolen base. 
  • Dylan Mennillo picked up his first hit for the Dutchmen with a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Fetterman tallied a hit as well. The catcher also threw out two runners attempting to steal.
  • Fravel struck out a career-high four batters in three innings on the mound. 
  • Andrew Spaan registered two strikeouts in his start. 
  • Schreier logged his first career strikeout during a scoreless inning of relief. 
Game Two
SUNY Brockport got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead on an RBI single to left field and a two-run single to left-center field. Starting pitcher Jaden Click then posted a scoreless top of the second for the Dutchmen, retiring the side in order with a pop out to first base, a groundout to second base, and a flyout to right field. The Golden Eagles added another run in the top of the third inning, taking a 4-0 advantage on an RBI ground-rule double to left-center field.

Lebanon Valley responded by plating a run in the bottom of the third inning, trimming the deficit to 4-1. The club had runners on second and third base after Mennillo was hit by a pitch and Fetterman doubled to left-center field. Mennillo later came home to score on a wild pitch with two outs. The Flying Dutchmen followed this by blanking the opposition in the top of the fourth, as Blair Shaffer stranded the bases loaded by recording the final two outs of the frame with a flyout to left field and a strikeout looking.

The Dutchmen crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the fourth inning, narrowing the score to 4-3. The program got its rally started by Justin Ranker reaching on an error by the center fielder and then stealing second base, before Kody Phillips drew a walk. This was followed by Weir tallying a walk to load the bases. Later in the inning, Fetterman hit a two-out two-run single to right-center field, knocking in Ranker and pinch-runner Christian Vanelli. SUNY Brockport then tacked on a run with an RBI double to left field in the top of the fifth, going ahead 5-3. 

The Golden Eagles scored five in the top of the sixth, making it a 10-3 contest with an inning that included an RBI single to center, a wild pitch, and a two-run triple to right field. Lebanon Valley added a run in the bottom half of the sixth, making it a 10-4 game. Murphy came up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a ball to third base and reached on an RBI fielder's choice, plating Mennillo. SUNY Brockport then scored a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to left-center field, prompting 11-4 to be the final score.

  • Fetterman recorded two hits with a double, while leading Lebanon Valley with two RBIs. The senior reached base four times during the ballgame. 
  • Mennillo walked and scored his first two runs with LVC. 
  • Ranker logged a hit, a run scored, and a stolen base. 
  • Vanelli had a hit, his first career walk, and a run scored. 
  • Murphy tallied an RBI and a walk.
  • Brewer had two hits with a double and drew a walk. 
  • Phillips registered his first career walk. 
  • Weir also recorded a walk. 
  • Landon Sexton struck out two batters in his appearance on the mound.
  • Click, Shaffer, Kyle McCracken, Michael Williams, and Tony Bennage each struck out a batter in their outings. 
Up Next
Lebanon Valley will return to action at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, when the club will take on Wilkes University in Fort Pierce, Florida. This will be the first of five games the Dutchmen are scheduled to play during their Florida Spring Break Trip.
