FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Lebanon Valley College Baseball team's lineup scored five runs with two outs and starting pitcher
Jacob Detwiler struck out eight batters, propelling the club to an 8-5 victory over Wilkes University on Tuesday, March 4, at Bob Gladwin Stadium.
Justin Ranker and
Owen Berry helped lead the way for the Flying Dutchmen at the plate, recording two RBIs each.
Detwiler began his outing with a scoreless top of the first inning for the Dutchmen (2-5), picking up three strikeouts during the frame. Lebanon Valley then struck first in the bottom half, taking an early 4-0 lead over the Colonels (4-3). The program loaded the bases after a leadoff double to left-center field by
Kameron Wetzel, a single up the middle by
Logan Brewer, and a one-out walk by
Devin Kreger. Berry later drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded, plating Wetzel. Ranker followed this by registering two RBIs on a single to left, and a fielding error by the left fielder allowed a third runner to score on the play. This base hit by Ranker and the error brought home Brewer, Kreger, and Berry.
Detwiler posted more zeros for LVC in the top of the second and the top of the third, notching the third out in both frames with strikeouts swinging. The Dutchmen then tacked on a run in the bottom of the third, going ahead 5-0.
Jace Fetterman led off the inning with a single to right field and later crossed the plate on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Berry. In the top of the fourth inning, Detwiler remained dominant by getting the first two hitters for Wilkes to fly out before striking out the third.
Detwiler capped off his strong outing by blanking the opposition again in the top of the fifth, logging a pair of strikeouts before Fetterman, LVC's catcher, threw to Berry at shortstop to catch a runner attempting to steal. The Colonels then got on the board in the top of the sixth, narrowing the score to 5-1 on an error. Wilkes followed this with three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, making it a 5-4 game on a two-run single and a fielder's choice.
Lebanon Valley answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 7-4 advantage. Wetzel added the first tally of the frame on a sacrifice fly to left field, knocking in
Christian Vanelli. Brewer followed this with an RBI double to right-center field, bringing in Murphy. The Colonels then scored again in the top of the eighth inning, trimming their deficit to 7-5 with a bases-loaded walk.
The Flying Dutchmen tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, extending their lead to 8-5.
Dylan Mennillo drew a one-out walk and later came around to score on a passed ball.
