WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Jess Dawe scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College Women's Ice Hockey team, as the program dropped a hard-fought 3-1 contest to Wilkes University on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Toyota SportsPlex.
The Colonels (17-4-1, 15-2-1 MAC) generated some offensive opportunities early in the first period, and the Dutchmen (14-6-1, 11-5-1 MAC) responded with five saves by goaltender
Mia Frisoni within the opening 3:17. The goalie also delivered a stop for LVC at the 5:33 mark while Wilkes was short-handed. Lebanon Valley's offense worked to create chances during the frame as well, as
Addison Taylert took a shot on goal that was saved at the 5:59 mark before
Leela Nemani's attempt was saved at the 6:24 mark. Back on the defensive end,
Norah McCauliffe blocked a shot attempt at the 7:01 mark while
Julia Schafer and
Anna Dale each tallied a block within six seconds in the ninth minute. Frisoni then came through with a pair of stops within 10 seconds in the 10
th minute.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring 10:02 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead over the Colonels. The program struck first on a goal by Dawe, following an assist by Nemani. Wilkes countered with shots on goal at the 10:51 and 12:04 marks, which resulted in more saves by Frisoni. LVC also kept working to limit the opposition with a block by McCauliffe 12:36 into the period, before
Chelly Wolff and Schafer each logged a block within eight seconds in the 14
th minute. The Colonels later found the net 14:23 into the first, tying the game at 1-1 on a goal by Chayce Hyndman.
Frisoni also kept battling defensively as the end of the period approached, making two more stops for LVC within 14 seconds in the 18
th minute. The team's offense followed this with three more shots on goal during the remaining minutes, including an attempt by Dale that was saved at the 17:50 mark. Schafer then took a shot that was saved 19:15 into the frame before Taylert's try was saved 34 seconds later.
The Flying Dutchmen continued their strong defensive effort when the second period began, as Frisoni made three saves and McCauliffe registered two blocks during the first 1:15. LVC also kept working to create scoring chances, as
Tiffany Anderson took a shot that was saved at the 1:58 mark before Taylert had an attempt saved two seconds later. Wilkes then scored again 3:31 into the second, taking a 2-1 advantage on a power-play goal by Rachel Morey. Lebanon Valley's offense responded with a scoring chance at the 5:08 mark, as
Maeghan Howson's shot on goal was saved during a power play. Later in the period, Nemani contributed to the program's defensive efforts by blocking a shot at the 6:46 mark before tallying another block at the 7:49 mark.
Wilkes went on a power play that began 8:00 into the second, and Lebanon Valley generated an offensive opportunity with a shot by Anderson that was saved at the 8:11 mark when the squad was short-handed. The Dutchmen were also productive defensively during this stretch, as Frisoni made two saves within 32 seconds during the 10
th minute while the team was on a penalty kill. The goaltender followed this by delivering seven more saves over the next 4:39. Offensively, Lebanon Valley created some chances during the 16
th minute when Dale and Nemani each took a shot on goal that was saved within 38 seconds. Frisoni proceeded to record six more saves during the remainder of the second, including three in the final minute.
Laura Radford also delivered a block at the 19:36 mark, and Anderson had a block with two seconds left.
The Dutchmen came through with more key defensive plays early in the third period, as Frisoni made six saves while Schafer and
Erin Yorke each had a block during the first 4:36. LVC also tallied more shots as the frame progressed, as
Cheyenne Wilk logged an attempt that was saved at the 5:36 mark. The Colonels followed this with some scoring chances, and the Flying Dutchmen answered with a save by Frisoni at the 6:35 mark before Dale blocked a shot at the 7:19 mark. Frisoni also had a stop 7:59 into the period before Yorke registered a block at the 9:02 mark.
Wilkes added a tally 9:22 into the third period, making it a 3-1 game on a goal by Gianna Pacilio. The Colonels then recorded more shots on goal as the frame progressed, and Frisoni came through with saves at the 9:50 and 13:32 marks. Schafer also posted another block for LVC 15:05 into the third before Frisoni made six more saves over the next 4:24. The goaltender delivered three of the saves within 15 seconds in the 19
th minute and made her last stop within 31 seconds left. The Dutchmen kept battling until the clock expired, as Anderson put a shot on goal that was saved with just 21 seconds remaining. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the game.
