ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Jace Fetterman,
Logan Brewer, and
Dylan Mennillo each recorded an RBI for the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team, as the program dropped a 13-4 decision to North Carolina Wesleyan on Monday, Feb. 24, in the final game of the series at Bauer Field.
The Dutchmen (1-2) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Battling Bishops (2-5). Fetterman was the game's first baserunner, as the catcher hit a two-out double to left-center field before coming home to score on Brewer's RBI single to left.
Jaden Click started on the mound for Lebanon Valley and pitched a scoreless bottom of the first, recording a flyout to right field and an around-the-horn double play. North Carolina Wesleyan then got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning, tying the contest at 1-1 on a solo home run.
Click tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the third for Lebanon Valley, maintaining the tie with a flyout to right, a foul out to first base, and a flyout to center field. The Bishops later added a couple more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, going ahead 3-1 on an RBI double to right-center field and an RBI fielder's choice on a ball hit to shortstop. The Dutchmen kept battling in the batter's box as the game went into the top of the fifth inning, as the program narrowed its deficit to 3-2.
Duncan Weir got things started with a single to left field and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt back to the mound by
Kenny Palmieri. Fetterman then hit a two-out RBI single to right-center field, driving in Weir to make it a one-run ballgame.
Jacob Detwiler then came in to pitch for the Flying Dutchmen in the bottom of the fifth, retiring the side in order with a groundout to shortstop, a flyout to left field, and a strikeout. Lebanon Valley crossed the plate again in the top of the sixth inning, tying the contest at 3-3.
Owen Berry led off the frame with a double to left field, and
Devin Kreger later hit a one-out single to left field. North Carolina Wesleyan's pitcher then attempted to pick off Berry at third base and threw the ball past the bag, allowing the junior to score.
Detwiler pitched his second shutout inning of relief in the bottom of the sixth, registering a groundout to second base, a groundout to shortstop, and a flyout to center field. Detwiler also blanked the opposition in the bottom of the seventh, as the junior had runners on the corners with two outs and got out of the frame with a flyout to center. The Dutchmen then scored again in the top of the eighth, taking a 4-3 lead. The club loaded the bases after Berry reached on a hit-by-pitch,
Kameron Wetzel walked, and
Justin Ranker delivered a pinch-hit single to left. This was followed by
Dylan Mennillo drawing a walk with the bases full, bringing in Berry.
The Bishops scored 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, making it a 13-4 game. The team tied the contest on a solo homer and took the lead on a two-run double. This would stand as the final score.
