Women’s Ice Hockey Posts Victory at Stevenson in Regular Season Finale

REISTERSTOWN, Md. ­­– Leela Nemani scored twice for the Lebanon Valley College Women's Ice Hockey team in its final game of the regular season, setting the tone for the program's dominant 5-0 win over Stevenson University on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Reisterstown SportsPlex.

The Dutchmen (17-7-1, 14-6-1 MAC) took the first shot on goal of the contest, as Anna Dale recorded an attempt that was saved just eight seconds into the first period. The Mustangs (8-16-1, 6-14-1) countered with a couple of offensive opportunities, and goaltender Mia Frisoni responded with two saves for LVC within three seconds in the third minute. Lebanon Valley's offense then struck first 4:01 into the opening period, taking a 1-0 lead over Stevenson. The team got on the scoreboard with a goal by Nemani, courtesy of an assist by Jess Dawe. On the defensive end, Cheyenne Wilk followed this by blocking a shot at the 6:53 mark. The Flying Dutchmen also continued to send the puck toward the net as the first frame progressed, putting five shots on goal over the next 3:12.

The Mustangs proceeded to tally four shots on goal over the next 1:08, and Frisoni delivered saves on each attempt. The goaltender posted three of these stops within seven seconds in the 11th minute. The Dutchmen then found the net again 14:22 into the first period, taking a 2-0 advantage. The program went ahead by two when Nemani netted a power-play goal following an assist by Wilk. Stevenson's offense later sent a shot toward the net 16:15 into the period, and Frisoni made the save. The Flying Dutchmen followed this by taking three more shots on goal during the period, including one by Tiffany Anderson during a power play at the 18:52 mark. 

Lebanon Valley continued its strong defensive effort when the second period began, as Erin Yorke blocked a shot attempt just 40 seconds into the frame. Dutchmen also kept creating scoring chances, as Nemani and Maeghan Howson each took a shot that was saved within 17 seconds in the third minute. Nemani then tallied another attempt 4:22 into the second. LVC kept battling defensively as well, as Laura Radford blocked a shot at the 7:14 mark before Frisoni posted three saves in the ninth minute during a penalty kill. 

The Flying Dutchmen countered with a shot by Howson, which was saved 10:33 into the second period. The Mustangs then went on another power play that began in the 15th minute, and LVC kept the opposition from logging a shot on goal during this stretch. Yorke contributed to these defensive efforts, delivering a block 16:04 into the second during the penalty kill. Lebanon Valley followed this with another scoring chance, as Dale took a shot that was saved at the 17:49 mark. The program also had some key defensive plays during the remaining minutes of the period, as Yorke and Radford each blocked a shot, and Frisoni made two saves within 29 seconds in the 19th minute. 

The Dutchmen scored again 1:58 into the third period, claiming a 3-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Howson. Stevenson's offense responded with a chance, but LVC answered with a save by Frisoni at the 2:09 mark. Yorke and Alex Franke also each had a block, and Frisoni tallied a save within 41 seconds in the fifth minute. The Mustangs then began a power play at the 7:00 mark, and Frisoni came through with four saves over the next 1:31. The goaltender later posted more stops at the 9:42 and 11:11 marks. 

The Flying Dutchmen added a tally 14:53 into the third period, making it a 4-0 contest. Yorke found the net to extend the squad's advantage after assists by Wilk and Dawe. Lebanon Valley then tacked on an insurance point 15:42 into the third, going up 5-0 when Dale sent the puck into the back of the net. Anderson and Yorke were credited with the assists on LVC's fifth goal of the evening. The Dutchmen proceeded to hold the opposition to just two shots on goal during the remaining minutes of the third, which resulted in saves by Frisoni at the 15:49 and 16:37 marks. LVC went on to preserve its lead through the end of the period, securing the 5-0 victory. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Nemani scored her fifth and sixth goals of the campaign, marking a season-high two goals. The first-year's first goal of the night was her first career game-winner. 
  • Howson netted her 10th goal of the campaign. 
  • Yorke scored her sixth goal of the winter and registered an assist on Dale's goal. 
  • Dale scored her 26th goal of the season, which leads the nation. The sophomore now leads the conference with 39 points during the campaign. 
  • Dawe dished out a career-high two assists. The graduate student tallied the assist on Nemani's first goal and logged an assist on Yorke's goal.
  • Wilk also recorded a career-high two assists. The senior assisted Nemani's second goal and had the primary assist on Yorke's goal. 
  • Anderson logged her team-leading 16th assist of the season by dishing out the primary assist on the goal by Dale. 
  • Lebanon Valley outshot Stevenson 32-24. 
  • Dale, Anderson, and Nemani tied for the team lead in shots on goal with six each. 
  • Frisoni recorded 24 saves during her fifth shutout of the season, which set a single-season program record. The goaltender also picked up her eighth victory of the campaign, tying Lacy Bigelow's eight wins this winter for the single-season program record. 
  • Defensively, the Dutchmen had a 12-8 advantage in blocked shots.
  • Yorke posted a game-high and career-high five blocks.
  • Radford also tallied two blocks. 
  • The Flying Dutchmen were successful on all four penalty kills. 
  • LVC had a 30-24 advantage in faceoff victories. 
  • Anderson led the program with 14 faceoff wins.

The third-seeded Dutchmen will begin postseason competition at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, when the program will travel to take on second-seeded Arcadia University in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Semifinal at Hatfield Ice Arena in Colmar, Pennsylvania. Top-seeded Wilkes University will host fourth-seeded Alvernia University in the other semifinal matchup of the MAC Women's Ice Hockey Championship.
