HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team scored two goals within the final 10 minutes of the third period, propelling the program to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Hood College on Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex.
The program trailed by a goal when
Leela Nemani found the net for LVC with 9:14 remaining in the contest, tying the score.
Addison Taylert then recorded the game-winning goal for the Flying Dutchmen (8-2-0, 6-2-0 MAC) with just 1:18 left on the clock.
Lauren Pennino and
Addi Alaoui were also key contributors, scoring goals during the victory.
The Dutchmen were productive defensively early in the game, as goaltender
Savannah Alexander made two saves within five seconds during the first minute. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring 1:25 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead over the Blazers (2-4-2, 2-4-2 MAC). The program struck first when Pennino sent the puck into the back of the net for a goal. Hood countered with a couple of offensive opportunities, but LVC responded with a block by
McKayla Romano at the 1:40 mark and a save by Alexander at the 2:13 mark. The Blazers later got on the board at the 5:46 mark with a goal by Olivia Sharkoski, tying the contest at 1-1. The programs proceeded to go back and forth over the next 5:31, as Hood put four shots on goal and the Flying Dutchmen tallied three attempts during this stretch.
The Blazers began a power play in the 13th minute of the first period, and the Dutchmen delivered a successful penalty kill with blocks by
Camryn Crouch and
Norah McCauliffe and two stops by Alexander. Hood found the net again 14:55 into the opening frame, taking a 2-1 advantage on a goal by Sofie Ancona. Lebanon Valley followed this by creating some scoring chances, as
Anna Dale and Taylert each had two shots saved within 21 seconds in the 16th minute. LVC kept battling on the defensive end during the remainder of the period, as Alexander logged a save at the 17:40 mark when Hood was on a power play. The goaltender then registered stops at the 18:46 and 19:02 marks, and Pennino blocked a shot at the 19:21 mark while the opposition had a 5-on-3 advantage.
Alexander posted a save for the Dutchmen just 52 seconds into the second period, during another successful penalty kill. Lebanon Valley then scored 3:34 into the frame, tying things up at 2-2. The team evened the score when Alaoui netted a goal, following an assist by Romano. The Flying Dutchmen later went on a power play in the fifth minute and put seven shots on goal during this stretch. In the seventh minute, Romano, Pennino, and Nemani each had an attempt saved within four seconds. LVC also started power plays in the 11th and 14th minutes, which led to the team putting five more shots on target during these stretches.
Hood went on a power play in the 17th minute of the second period, and Alexander made a save for Lebanon Valley at the 16:41 mark. The Blazers then scored on a power-play goal by Ella Bynan at the 16:57 mark, taking a 3-2 lead. The Dutchmen also continued to send the puck toward the net as the end of the frame approached, as
Brysha Schmidt put a shot on goal that was saved at the 18:49 mark, and Pennino had a shot saved with 14 seconds left.
The programs competed defensively at the beginning of the third period, as each team put two shots on target that were saved within the first 5:43. Hood began a power play in the seventh minute of the frame, and LVC answered with a save by Alexander and a block by
Abby Mak during a successful penalty kill. The Dutchmen then went on a power play in the 10th minute and capitalized on the 5-on-4 advantage to tie the game at 3-3. The program tied things up on a power-play goal by Nemani at the 10:46 mark, courtesy of an assist by Taylert.
Alexander kept working to limit the opposition as the third period progressed, making six more saves for the Flying Dutchmen over the next 7:19. The goaltender delivered three of these saves within 15 seconds in the 16th minute, during the program's sixth successful penalty kill of the day. Lebanon Valley then scored 18:42 into the third, claiming a 4-3 lead on a clutch goal by Taylert. LVC proceeded to maintain its one-goal advantage through the end of play, securing the victory.
