Men’s Ice Hockey Battles Tough Against SUNY Brockport

RUTLAND, Vt. ­­– Lukas Washco netted a goal for the Lebanon Valley College men's ice hockey team, as the program dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest to SUNY Brockport in the consolation game of Vermont State University Castleton's Terry Moran Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 29, at Spartan Arena. Goaltender Jadon Lee also posted a game-high and season-high 38 saves for LVC. 

The Dutchmen created some scoring chances early in the game, putting four shots on goal during the first 3:08. During this stretch, Mason Proskin and Max Kontir each put a shot on target during a power play, and these attempts were saved within five seconds in the first minute. The Golden Eagles countered with a pair of shots within 21 seconds in the fifth minute, which resulted in Lee posting two saves for Lebanon Valley. Garret Jackson also contributed to LVC's defensive efforts with a block at the 5:11 mark, while John King had a block just under a minute later. The Flying Dutchmen then generated another offensive opportunity, as Proskin's shot was saved 7:37 into the first period.

Lee kept working to limit the opposition as the first frame progressed, delivering seven saves for Lebanon Valley over the next 5:10. SUNY Brockport then opened the scoring 14:07 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Livio Azevedo. The Dutchmen proceeded to battle defensively, as Lee tallied eight more stops while Anton Petrovskiy blocked a shot attempt over the next 4:39. LVC's offense also created some more chances before the end of the period, as Proskin, Owen Ames, and King each put a shot on goal that was saved within 33 seconds in the final minute. 

The Flying Dutchmen continued to send the puck toward the net at the beginning of the second period, putting three shots on goal that were saved during the first 3:30. Petrovskiy took the last shot of this stretch while the program was short-handed, during a successful penalty kill for LVC. The Golden Eagles then attempted a shot at the 4:50 mark, and Jackson came through with a block for Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen followed this with a shot by Artur Kondrashov, which was saved at the 5:27 mark. Defensively, Lee later registered more saves for LVC at the 6:54, 8:05, and 8:46 marks. 

Lebanon Valley countered with a shot on goal by Ames that was saved 9:52 into the second period. SUNY Brockport then began a power play in the 11th minute, and the Dutchmen answered with a save by Lee and blocks by King and Kontir during a successful penalty kill. LVC's defense also remained productive through the rest of the frame, as Lee logged four more stops and Ian Lindberg posted a block during the last 7:20 of the second. 

The Flying Dutchmen took the first shot of the third period, as Ames had a try saved 45 seconds into the frame. The Golden Eagles then went on a power play in the second minute, and Lebanon Valley delivered a successful penalty kill with two saves by Lee and blocks by Collin Nolan and Kontir. This was followed by the Dutchmen beginning a power play in the fourth minute, which led to Ames putting a shot on target that was saved at the 3:53 mark. SUNY Brockport later started another power play in the sixth minute, and LVC recorded a successful penalty kill with four more stops by Lee. The goaltender made three of these saves within 16 seconds in the seventh minute. 

Lebanon Valley's offense began a power play in the ninth minute of the third period, and Reece McDonald generated an opportunity with a shot that was saved at the 9:22 mark. Washco contributed to LVC's efforts as well, sending a shot toward the net that was saved at the 10:52 mark. Lee also kept battling as the frame went on, making more saves for the Dutchmen at the 12:13 and 13:33 marks. The Golden Eagles then scored again on a goal by Nicholas Maria, taking a 2-0 advantage 13:39 into the third. SUNY Brockport later went on a power play in the 16th minute, and Lee made three saves while King and Petrovskiy each had a block during Lebanon Valley's fifth successful penalty kill of the contest.

The Dutchmen got on the board 18:22 into the third period, narrowing the score to 2-1. The program made it a one-point game when Washco found the net for a goal, courtesy of assists by Artem Kondrashov and Artur Kondrashov. Lebanon Valley proceeded to keep battling during the remainder of the contest, as Nolan, Petrovskiy, and McDonald each put a shot on goal that was saved during the final 1:14. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of play.

  • Washco scored his first goal of the season, marking his first point of the campaign. The senior was named to the All-Tournament Team of the Terry Moran Invitational Tournament at Vermont State University Castleton. 
  • Artem Kondrashov and Artur Kondrashov recorded their first career points by logging their first career assists on Washco's goal. 
  • Lee posted a game-high and season-high 38 saves. 
  • Lebanon Valley put 25 shots on goal.
  • Ames and Petrovskiy tied for the team lead in shots on target with four each. 
  • Defensively, the Flying Dutchmen had a 17-8 advantage in blocked shots. 
  • King tied a game-high and career-high four blocks while winning six faceoffs. 
  • Petrovskiy and Jackson tallied three blocks each, which marked a season-high for Petrovskiy.
  • LVC registered 35 faceoff victories. 
  • Kontir logged a game-high 13 faceoff wins. 
  • Ames won seven faceoffs.

Lebanon Valley will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m., against Arcadia University in the first of two matchups next weekend at Hatfield Ice Arena in Colmar, Pa.
