COLMAR, Pa. – Cade Helmer and
John King each scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College men's ice hockey team, as the program tied Arcadia University 2-2 in overtime on Friday, Dec. 5, at Hatfield Ice Arena. LVC earned a point in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) standings by forcing a shootout, which Arcadia won 2-1.
The Knights took the first two shots of the game, which resulted in goaltender
Jadon Lee making a pair of saves for the Dutchmen within 14 seconds in the second minute. Lebanon Valley's offense countered with a shot on target by
Lukas Washco, which was saved 2:06 into the first period. Back on the defensive end, Lee posted five more stops, and
Ian Lindberg had a block for LVC over the next 6:01. King then created a scoring chance for the Flying Dutchmen, putting a shot on target that was saved at the 8:12 mark. Arcadia began a power play in the 11th minute, but Lebanon Valley's defense limited the opposition to just one shot during a successful penalty kill, which was saved by Lee at the 12:28 mark.
The Dutchmen also kept sending the puck toward the net, as Washco's attempt was saved 13:22 into the first frame, and
Mason Proskin had a try saved at the 15:45 mark during a power play.
Jordan Stear contributed to the program's offensive efforts as well, taking a shot that was saved at the 16:59 mark. LVC followed this with more productive defense, as Lee made three saves while
Collin Nolan,
Owen Ames, and Stear each blocked a shot over the next 2:34. The Flying Dutchmen then registered the last two shots of the period, as
Max Kontir and Ames both had attempts saved within the final 12 seconds.
Lebanon Valley was aggressive offensively at the start of the second period, putting five shots on goal that were saved within the first 1:43 of the frame. The Dutchmen then opened the scoring at the 1:47 mark, taking a 1-0 lead. The program struck first when King netted a goal, courtesy of assists by Helmer and
Troy Andrews. Defensively, Lee made more saves for LVC at the 1:53 and 2:09 marks, before logging a stop at the 3:57 mark when the opposition had a 5-on-3 advantage. The goaltender also tallied four more saves over the next 3:58. The Flying Dutchmen followed this with some more offensive opportunities, as
Jesse Shogan had a shot saved, Helmer had two attempts saved, and Andrews had a try saved within 39 seconds in the 10th minute.
Lee also kept working to hold the Knights in check, delivering more saves for LVC at the 9:59 and 10:26 marks. The Dutchmen then found the net again 11:00 into the second period, taking a 2-0 advantage on a goal by Helmer after an assist by Kontir. Arcadia later went on a power play in the 14th minute, and Lebanon Valley responded with a block by
Aidan Bright at the 14:40 mark and a stop by Lee at the 15:21 mark during a successful penalty kill. The Knights got on the board 16:01 into the second, narrowing the score to 2-1 on a goal by Cody Mastay. The Flying Dutchmen followed this by tallying the last three shots on goal of the frame, as Helmer had two attempts saved and Kontir had a try stopped during a power play, within 30 seconds in the 18th minute.
Lee continued to battle when the third period got underway, coming through with five saves for Lebanon Valley within the first 1:52. The Dutchmen countered with a shot on goal by Ames, which was saved at the 2:01 mark. The teams proceeded to go back and forth until Lee registered more stops at the 6:39 and 7:20 marks. Shogan then sent a shot toward the net for LVC, which was saved 7:54 into the frame. Arcadia later scored at the 8:48 mark on a goal by Jude Cole, tying the game at 2-2.
The Flying Dutchmen and the Knights followed this by putting four shots on target each during the remainder of the third period. Lebanon Valley recorded two of these attempts during a power play, as
Dylan Miller had a shot saved 16:32 into the frame, and Stear's try was saved at the 17:54 mark. Arcadia later took the last shot of regulation, which Lee saved for LVC at the 19:06 mark before the contest went into overtime.
The Knights took a shot just 42 seconds into overtime, and Lee delivered a big save for the Dutchmen. Lebanon Valley responded with a shot on goal by Kontir, which was saved at the 1:16 mark. Lee then made more key stops for the Flying Dutchmen at the 2:39 and 3:03 marks. This was followed by
Anton Petrovskiy tallying a shot for LVC that was saved with just 28 seconds left in the five-minute overtime. The Knights then sent a shot toward the net as time expired, and Lee answered with a clutch save for the Dutchmen. This prompted the game to finish in a 2-2 tie at the end of overtime, forcing a shootout.
Each team missed its first attempt of the shootout before Washco made Lebanon Valley's second shot. Arcadia and LVC then missed their next shots, while Cole made the Knights' third try to even the shootout at 1-1. The teams remained tied until Brendan Dicker made Arcadia's fifth shot, prompting the program to win the shootout 2-1.

- Helmer tied a game-high and season-high two points, scoring his third goal of the year and dishing out an assist. The senior also tallied a game-high seven shots on goal.
- King netted his fourth goal of the campaign. The junior also led the team with three blocks on the defensive end.
