READING, Pa. – Addison Taylert and
Leela Nemani scored key goals for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, leading the program to an exciting 2-1 victory and sweep of the weekend series against Alvernia University on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Body Zone.
The Dutchmen (7-1-0, 5-1-0 MAC) took the first shot of the contest, as
McKayla Romano had an attempt saved 1:07 into the first period. The Golden Wolves (5-3-0, 4-2-0 MAC) countered with some offensive opportunities, and LVC's defense responded with four saves by goaltender
Mia Frisoni and blocks by
Sophia Scatena and
Rhiannon Price during the next 6:20. Lebanon Valley then put a pair of shots on goal, as
Adriana Laveck and Nemani each had a try saved within 39 seconds in the 11th minute.
Back on the defensive end, Frisoni posted two saves for the Flying Dutchmen within 13 seconds in the 13th minute of the first period. Lebanon Valley also created some more scoring chances, as
Sky Campanile put a shot on target that was saved at the 12:44 mark, and
Anna Dale had a shot saved 18 seconds later. Alvernia then began a power play in the 14th minute, and LVC's defense answered with a block by
Laura Radford and three stops by Frisoni during a successful penalty kill. The Dutchmen proceeded to put four more shots on goal during the remaining minutes of the first, as Romano,
Abby Mak,
Lauren Pennino, and
Addi Alaoui each had a try saved during this stretch. The Golden Wolves took the last shot of the frame, which resulted in a save by Frisoni with 41 seconds left.
The programs went back and forth defensively early in the second period, as each squad put two shots on goal that were saved within the first 6:09. Alvernia then put three shots on target within 13 seconds in the 10th minute, and Frisoni came through with saves for Lebanon Valley on each attempt. The Flying Dutchmen followed this by generating some opportunities on the offensive end, tallying five shots on goal over the next 3:17. During this stretch,
Camryn Crouch, Dale, and Mak each had an attempt saved within 37 seconds in the 13th minute.
The Golden Wolves went on a power play in the 15th minute of the second period, but the Dutchmen created an opportunity with a shot by Dale that was saved at the 14:50 mark while the squad was short-handed. This was followed by Frisoni logging a save for LVC at the 15:15 mark, when the program was on a penalty kill. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring 16:14 into the second frame, taking a 1-0 lead over Alvernia. The team got on the board when Taylert sent the puck into the back of the net for a short-handed goal, courtesy of an assist by Romano. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni proceeded to make four more saves for the Flying Dutchmen during the rest of the period. The goaltender registered two of these stops within 23 seconds of the last minute, while the opposition was on a power play.
Alvernia completed its power play early in the third period, and Frisoni made a save for Lebanon Valley 18 seconds into the frame to contribute to a successful penalty kill. The Dutchmen also created some more scoring chances, as Mak put a shot on target that was saved at the 2:06 mark, and
Allison Guyer's attempt was saved at the 4:56 mark. Defensively, Frisoni later delivered a save for LVC, and
Amy McKeigue blocked a shot within three seconds in the sixth minute. The Flying Dutchmen then went on power plays that began in the eighth and 11th minutes, and the program put seven more shots on goal during this stretch that concluded in the 13th minute. During the team's first power play, Nemani, Romano, Taylert, and
Tiffany Anderson each took a shot that was saved within 19 seconds in the 10th minute.
Frisoni continued to battle as the third period progressed, recording more saves for Lebanon Valley at the 12:21 and 16:16 marks. The Dutchmen found the net again 18:01 into the third, taking a 2-0 advantage. The program went up by two when Nemani sent a shot past the goaltender, following assists by
Mallory Burdick and Laveck. The Golden Wolves responded with a goal by Lauren Jascewsky at the 18:13 mark, narrowing the score to 2-1. Ultimately, the Flying Dutchmen went on to maintain their lead through the end of the game and secure the win.
