Dutchmen Women’s Ice Hockey Battles Tough in Series Finale at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. ­­– Tiffany Anderson and Anna Dale each netted a goal for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, as the program dropped a hard-fought 4-2 contest to No. 15 Wilkes University on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Toyota SportsPlex. 

The Dutchmen (5-1-0, 3-1-0 MAC) were productive defensively early in the first period, as McKayla Romano blocked a shot and goaltender Mia Frisoni made two saves within the first 3:30. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring 3:38 into the contest, taking a 1-0 lead over the Colonels (4-1-0, 3-1-0 MAC). The program got on the board when Anderson sent the puck into the back of the net for a goal, courtesy of an assist by Dale. Wilkes proceeded to tally seven shots on goal over the next 3:55, and Frisoni came through with saves for LVC on each attempt. The goaltender also tallied a stop at the 8:19 mark when the opposition was on a power play. 

The Colonels found the net 9:02 into the first period, tying the game at 1-1 on a power-play goal by Megan Bell. The Flying Dutchmen countered with a shot on target by Sky Campanile, which was saved at the 9:38 mark. Wilkes then scored again on a goal by Haylee Bouchard at the 10:12 mark, taking a 2-1 advantage. Lebanon Valley continued to battle on the defensive end as the first frame progressed, as Frisoni made three saves while Laura Radford, Lauren Pennino, Brysha Schmidt, Amy McKeigue, Najla Hatem each blocked a shot during the next 4:31. The Colonels later added a tally at the 15:01 mark, going ahead 3-1 on a goal by Bell. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni logged three more saves for LVC during the remaining minutes of the first period. 

The Dutchmen generated an offensive opportunity early in the second period, as Leela Nemani put a shot on goal that was saved at the 1:43 mark. This was followed by Frisoni registering five stops over the next 4:37, including four saves when the opposition was on a power play. Wilkes then scored on a power-play goal by Nina Hudakova 6:36 into the second, making it a 4-1 contest. The Colonels proceeded to send more shots toward the net, but Frisoni delivered saves for the Flying Dutchmen at the 7:52, 9:49, 11:04, and 11:17 marks. 

LVC kept working to create scoring chances as the second period progressed, as Allison Guyer took a shot that was saved at the 12:25 mark, Pennino had an attempt saved at the 13:13 mark, and Anderson's try was saved at the 14:03 mark. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni posted six saves for the Dutchmen over the next 4:28. The goaltender's last stop during this stretch came on a penalty shot at the 18:31 mark. Lebanon Valley then found the net again with 14.7 seconds left in the second frame, narrowing the score to 4-2. The squad trimmed its deficit to two when Dale netted a power-play goal, following an assist by Campanile. 

Frisoni kept working to limit the opposition when the third period got underway, making a save for the Flying Dutchmen 32 seconds into a frame before tallying another stop at the 3:46 mark. Lebanon Valley followed this with a shot by Schmidt, which was saved at the 4:46 mark, when each program had four skaters on the ice. LVC also began a power play in the seventh minute, and Romano and Schmidt each put a shot on target that was saved during this stretch. Wilkes responded with a couple of shots, but Frisoni answered with two saves for the Dutchmen within two seconds in the 10th minute. 

Lebanon Valley's offense continued to send the puck toward the net as the third period rolled on, putting five shots on goal over the next 3:45. During this stretch, Addi Alaoui took a shot that was saved during a power play at the 10:13 mark, while Pennino had a pair of attempts saved within 25 seconds in the 11th minute when the program had a 5-on-three advantage. Defensively, Frisoni went on to make nine more saves for the Dutchmen during the remaining minutes of the game. The goaltender posted three of these stops during a successful penalty kill for LVC. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of play.

  • Dale tied a game-high two points with her fifth goal of the season and an assist. The junior also blocked a shot on the defensive end. 
  • Anderson scored her fourth goal of the campaign and tallied a game-high 16 faceoff wins. The senior also blocked a season-high two shots on the defensive end. 
  • Campanile dished out her first assist of the year on Dale's goal. 
  • Frisoni made a season-high 47 saves.
  • Lebanon Valley put 19 shots on goal. 
  • Anderson and Pennino tied for the team lead in shots on target with three each. 
  • Defensively, the Flying Dutchmen had a 13-8 advantage in blocked shots. 
  • McKeigue logged a game-high and season-high four blocks. 
  • LVC recorded 24 faceoff victories.

The Flying Dutchmen will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m., against Alvernia University for the first of two matchups next weekend at Body Zone in Reading, Pa.
