WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Anna Dale scored a clutch goal for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team in overtime, securing the program's thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 15 Wilkes University on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Toyota SportsPlex.
McKayla Romano also netted two important goals for LVC, while
Addison Taylert delivered the game-tying goal.
After recording a couple of shots early in the first period, the Dutchmen (5-0-0, 3-0-0 MAC) took a 1-0 lead over the Colonels (3-1-0, 2-1-0 MAC) just 2:12 into the game. The program opened the scoring when Romano found the net for the first goal of the day. Wilkes countered with a shot attempt at the 3:34 mark, and
Camryn Crouch delivered a block for Lebanon Valley's defense. LVC then had a shot on goal by
Abby Mak, which was saved at the 5:29 mark. The Flying Dutchmen kept battling defensively as the frame progressed, as goaltender
Mia Frisoni posted a save at the 6:17 mark before
Tiffany Anderson blocked a shot and Frisoni logged two more stops within 11 seconds in the eighth minute.
Lebanon Valley later went on power plays that began in the 11th and 13th minutes, and during this stretch,
Addi Alaoui put a shot on goal that was saved at the 11:29 mark, while Romano's attempt was saved at the 13:48 mark. The Dutchmen followed this with some more offensive opportunities, as Dale and
Leela Nemani each put a shot on target that was saved within 19 seconds in the 16th minute. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni made a save for LVC at the 16:37 mark, and
Lauren Pennino blocked a shot 56 seconds later. Frisoni also registered a save, and Taylert had a block within 12 seconds in the 19th minute. Lebanon Valley then took the last two shots of the first period, as Dale and Nemani each tallied an attempt that was saved within eight seconds in the final minute.
The Colonels created several scoring chances early in the second period, and the Dutchmen answered with a block by
Norah McCauliffe and five saves by Frisoni within the first 2:02 of the frame. LVC's offense countered with a shot on goal by Nemani that was saved at the 4:09 mark. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni logged three more saves, and
Laura Radford blocked a shot attempt by Wilkes within 20 seconds in the sixth minute. This was followed by a couple of shots for Lebanon Valley, as
Maeghan Howson's attempt was saved 6:34 into the second, and Anderson's try was saved at the 8:13 mark.
The Flying Dutchmen continued to produce defensively as the second period went on, as McCauliffe tallied a block at the 8:34 mark before Frisoni made a save, and McCauliffe had another block within nine seconds in the 12th minute. Nemani also delivered a block for LVC at the 12:37 mark. The Colonels then went on a power play 13:00 into the frame, and the Dutchmen responded with three saves by Frisoni during a successful penalty kill. Lebanon Valley's offense also generated an opportunity while it was short-handed, as Romano took a shot that was saved at the 14:38 mark.
The Dutchmen later went on a power play in the 16th minute, as Alaoui put a shot on goal that was saved 15:55 into the second period. The program kept sending the puck toward the net as the end of the frame approached, as Alaoui and Pennino each had an attempt saved within 19 seconds in the 19th minute. Lebanon Valley scored again with just 21.1 seconds remaining in the period, taking a 2-0 advantage on Romano's second goal of the afternoon.
Wilkes took the first shot of the third period, and Frisoni came through with the save for Lebanon Valley. LVC followed this with a shot on goal by Taylert that was saved 11 seconds later, while Frisoni logged another stop at the 3:03 mark. The Colonels then got on the board 4:01 into the third, narrowing the score to 2-1 on a goal by Megan Bell. Wilkes proceeded to send more shots toward the net, which resulted in Frisoni posting saves for the Flying Dutchmen at the 5:38, 5:48, 7:23, and 8:46 marks. Lebanon Valley later went on a power play that began near the end of the ninth minute, and the squad registered shots by Dale, Taylert, and Alaoui that were saved during this stretch.
The Colonels scored again 10:35 into the third period, tying the contest at 2-2 on a short-handed goal by Gianna Pacilio. The Dutchmen kept competing on the defensive end as the frame progressed, as Frisoni made three more saves while Alaoui and
Rhiannon Price each had a block during a stretch of 1:37 that began in the 12th minute. Wilkes found the net again 13:09 into the third, taking a 3-2 lead on a goal by Nina Hudakova. The Colonels later went on a power play in the 16th minute, and Frisoni responded with three saves during a successful penalty kill for the Flying Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley's offense also kept working to generate opportunities toward the end of the third period, as Romano and Pennino each had a shot saved within 10 seconds in the 18th minute. The Dutchmen then scored 18:13 into the third, tying the game at 3-3. The program tied things up after Taylert had two shots saved and her third attempt got past the goaltender, courtesy of an assist by Anderson. Wilkes later went on a power play with just over a minute to go, and Frisoni posted a key save for LVC with 20 seconds remaining. The score remained even at the end of the third frame, sending the contest into overtime.
The Colonels continued the power play when overtime began and had a four-on-three advantage for the first 54 seconds. Wilkes attempted a shot that was blocked by Dale 30 seconds into the frame, during the successful penalty kill for Lebanon Valley. Frisoni later recorded big saves for LVC at the 2:23, 2:37, and 2:47 marks to maintain the tie. The Dutchmen then scored 3:04 into overtime, winning the game by a score of 4-3. The team secured its fifth consecutive victory when Dale netted the game-winning goal, following an assist by Anderson.
