Weidenhammer Scores Hat Trick in Win at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Lebanon Valley junior Claire Weidenhammer scored three times in the first 22 minutes to lead the field hockey team to a 7-0 victory at Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday afternoon in Gwynedd Valley.

The Dutchmen (7-4) put pressure on the Griffins (2-10) from the start as Lauren Foster and Abby Rodenberger put shots wide in the opening minutes. Foster had a shot blocked in the sixth minute before Weidenhammer missed wide in the eighth minute. LVC got on the board later in the eighth minute as Foster collected a wide shot by Danika Setlock and found Weidenhammer in the center of the circle for the first goal of the game. Joanna Ehrhart and Jillian Tait had back-to-back shots saved in the 14th minute as the Dutchmen battled to extend the lead. The Griffin took their first shot in the final minute of the quarter as Ella Weidenhammer made a save. The Griffins were awarded a penalty corner in the closing seconds. Gwynedd Mercy got a shot off that was blocked by the defense.

The Griffins took the first shot in the second quarter in the 18th minute as Ella Weidenhammer kicked it away. A minute later, her sister, Claire, scored her second goal of the game on a perfectly executed give-and-go with Rebecca Lane. Claire didn't wait long to complete her hat trick as she deflected a shot by Lane into the back of the cage in the 22nd minute. Madison Brewer and Tait added shots on goal that were saved in the 26th minute before Weidenhammer put a shot wide. The Griffin put a shot on goal in the final minute of the half that was saved.

Gracie Johnson and Lane had shots blocked in the opening minutes of the second half. The Dutchmen earned a penalty corner, and Weidenhammer had her shot blocked. Lane had a shot saved, Ehrhart had a shot blocked, and Lilah Shaub just missed wide as the Dutchmen looked for more goals. They finally broke through in the 40th minute as Tait scored off a loose ball, as she lifted the ball into the cage. It didn't take long for LVC to add another goal as Setlock put in a rebound off a shot by Shaub in the 43rd minute.

The offense continued in the fourth quarter as Brewer had a pair of shots saved and Foster sent a shot wide. The Dutchmen scored off a penalty corner in the 54th minute as Setlock fired a shot into the back of the cage. A minute later, Foster gave LVC a 7-0 lead with a goal. Foster nearly added a second goal a couple of minutes later, but her attempt was knocked away.
