ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley senior
Gracie Johnson scored her fourth goal of the season on a deflection as the field hockey team battled tough in the rain against ninth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday evening at Arnold Field in Annville. The visiting Ducks won the game 2-1.
The Dutchmen (7-5, 0-1 MAC Freedom) frustrated the Ducks (10-2, 1-0 MAC Freedom) in the first conference game of the season. LVC went toe-to-toe with its third ranked opponent of the year. Stevens earned a penalty corner in the third minute, where
Ella Weidenhammer came up with two big saves, first on a blast from the top of the circle, and then a second save on the rebound attempt. The Ducks nearly scored in the sixth minute as a shot hit the post, but Weidenhammer calmly knocked the rebound away, leaving no chance for a second attempt. The Dutchmen were unable to get a shot off during the first quarter against the stout Ducks' defense, but they were able to keep the game scoreless through the first 15 minutes.
Stevens had a penalty corner early in the second quarter. LVC blocked a shot attempt off the corner. The Ducks got on the board in the 18th minute using great passing to find the back of the cage. The Dutchmen responded in the 22nd minute off the team's first corner.
Gracie Johnson inserted the corner out to
Danika Setlock. Setlock sent a pass over the
Abby Rodenberger on the left wing. The junior then fired a shot that found a gap between the keeper and a defender and was aided by Johnson sticking her stick out and deflecting the ball into the back of the cage. Stevens retook the lead in the 26th minute as a forward knocked in a crossing pass in front of the cage.
LVC had a chance to tie the game up on the very first play of the second half.
Lauren Foster intercepted a pass and had a one-on-one with the goalie. Her shot attempt was kicked away for a big save. The Ducks had a pair of corners in the 34th minute. They were able to get a shot off on the second as Weidenhammer came up with another save. The teams battled up and down the field over the next 10 minutes, with neither defense allowing a shot on goal.
The Dutchmen earned a corner in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Johnson received a pass after inserting the ball, but her shot was blocked before it could get to the keeper. The Ducks had a corner a couple of minutes later, and once again, Weidenhammer came up with a save to keep the deficit at one. Foster put a shot just wide in the 54th minute as the Ducks locked down on defense in the final minutes. LVC pulled Weidenhammer for an extra attacker with 1:15 left, but the Ducks finished out the game without allowing a shot.
