Dutchmen Women’s Ice Hockey Posts Season-Opening Win at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. ­­– Anna Dale, McKayla Romano, and Addi Alaoui each scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, leading the program to a 3-0 victory over Chatham University in its season opener on Friday, Oct. 31, at Alpha Ice Complex. Romano also tallied an assist for LVC, tying a game-high two points. 

The Dutchmen (1-0-0) were aggressive offensively early in the first period, putting four shots on goal within the first 4:36. Lebanon Valley recorded two of these attempts during a power play, as Romano and Dale each put a shot on target that was saved within nine seconds in the fourth minute. The Cougars (0-1-0) countered with a shot at the 6:17 mark, which resulted in goaltender Mia Frisoni posting a save for LVC. The Flying Dutchmen created some more scoring chances as the first frame went on, as Sophia Scatena, Lauren Pennino, and Allison Guyer each took shots that were saved within a 34-second stretch that began near the end of the seventh minute. Chelly Wolff also contributed to the program's offensive efforts, tallying shots that were saved at the 8:52 and 9:10 marks.

Chatham followed this with a shot on goal 9:32 into the first period, and Frisoni delivered a save for Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen then opened the scoring 9:58 into the contest, taking a 1-0 lead over the Cougars. The program got on the board with Dale's first goal of the season, courtesy of assists by Pennino and Tiffany Anderson. LVC later registered five shots on goal over a stretch of 2:16 that started at the beginning of the 14th minute, including a pair of attempts by Wolff. Chatham then put three shots on target during the final 3:40 of the first period, and Frisoni came through with saves for Lebanon Valley at the 16:20, 16:22, and 18:19 marks. Wolff also made an impact defensively for the Flying Dutchmen, blocking a shot attempt by the opposition with just 24 seconds left in the first. 

The Cougars sent back-to-back shots toward the net at the beginning of the second period, and Frisoni responded with saves for the Dutchmen on both attempts in the second minute. Lebanon Valley countered with a shot on target by Guyer at the 2:15 mark, which was saved. The Flying Dutchmen also remained productive on the defensive end, as Camryn Crouch and Norah McCauliffe blocked consecutive shots by Chatham in the seventh minute, during a successful penalty kill for LVC. Later in the frame, Frisoni continued her dominant performance by posting two stops within 19 seconds in the ninth minute, before saving another shot at the 9:43 mark. The goaltender also made two saves for the Dutchmen within five seconds in the 12th minute.

The Cougars generated more offensive opportunities as the second period progressed, but Frisoni answered with saves for Lebanon Valley at the 13:57 and 14:23 marks, as well as back-to-back stops in the 16th minute. The Flying Dutchmen also kept battling offensively, putting 10 more shots on goal during the final 4:30 of the frame. During this stretch, LVC went on a power play toward the end of the 16th minute, and Dale took two shots that were saved while Pennino, Romano, and Leela Nemani each had attempts saved. Later in the second, Guyer put two shots on target that were saved, while Romano had a try saved, within six seconds in the 19th minute. Anderson then took the final shot of the period for the Flying Dutchmen, registering an attempt on target that was saved with seven seconds to go. 

Chatham put a shot on goal 57 seconds into the third period while completing a power play, and Frisoni responded with a big save for Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen then found the net again 3:23 into the third period, taking a 2-0 advantage. The team went ahead by two when Romano sent the puck into the back of the net for a goal, following an assist by Amy McKeigue. The Cougars followed this with a couple of scoring chances, and LVC's defense came through with a block by Crouch at the 4:52 mark and a save by Frisoni eight seconds later. 

Lebanon Valley added another tally 9:32 into the third, extending its lead to 3-0. LVC made it a three-point game when Alaoui netted a power-play goal after assists by Romano and McKeigue. The Dutchmen proceeded to keep taking shots as the final period went on, as Guyer and Nemani each had a shot saved within 11 seconds in the 11th minute, while Sky Campanile put a shot on target that was saved at the 11:48 mark. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni posted five more saves for Lebanon Valley during the remainder of the contest. The goaltender logged one of these stops at the 13:00 mark during a successful penalty kill, before Anderson blocked a shot by Chatham six seconds later. Ultimately, the Dutchmen went on to preserve their lead and secure the victory.

  • Romano tied a game-high two points for the first two points of her career, tallying her first career goal and first career assist. The first-year also won nine faceoffs in her first game.

  • Lebanon Valley outshot Chatham 40-25. 
  • Nemani had a game-high six shots on target. The sophomore also won seven faceoffs.
  • Frisoni made 25 saves during her first shutout of the season. 
  • The Dutchmen blocked nine shots on the defensive end. 
  • Crouch led the team with two blocks. 
  • LVC had a 34-26 advantage in faceoff victories.

Lebanon Valley will return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m., when the program will host the Cougars for its home opener at Hersheypark Arena.
