CHESTER, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley football team broke open a close game at halftime with 21 points in the third quarter to defeat host Widener University 34-14 on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium in Chester.
The Dutchmen (4-2, 4-1 MAC) got out to a slow start offensively against the Pride (2-4, 1-4 MAC) as Widener picked off the first pass of the game and returned it to the LVC 2. Two plays later, the Pride scored on a quarterback sneak up the middle for a one-yard touchdown. The woes continued for the Dutchmen as a fumble on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by the Pride. The defense buckled down and held the Pride to no points with three big stops and then a missed 31-yard field goal attempt.
Both teams went three-and-out on the next two drives, but the Dutchmen started to gain momentum with a big punt block by
Montgomery Sensenig to give LVC great field position.
Brian Dym put the Dutchmen on the board with a 44-yard field goal midway through the opening quarter. The teams traded possession three-and-outs the rest of the quarter, with Dym kicking a 47-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to make it a one-point game. The Dutchmen got a stop on defense and then had a long drive stall out near the goal line on an interception.
The Dutchmen's defense did its job to get the offense the ball back with 4:35 to go in the half.
Logan Klitsch found
Ethan Heisey for a 27-yard completion on the second play of the drive. After a pair of runs by Klitsch, the signal called found
Cameron Hirshman open in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
Ryan Fink gave LVC an opportunity to add more points before the half as he picked off a pass at the Widener 40 and returned it nine yards. LVC got the ball down to the four before calling on Dym for his third field goal try of the game. The Pride escaped the half still down 13-7 as Dym missed the 21-yarder.
LVC blocked its second punt of the game on the first drive of the second half as
Nahseem Cosme came up with the block and recovery inside the 10. Klitsch found
Drew Campbell for a six-yard reception, and then
Dion Bryant ran up the middle for a one-yard touchdown. The Dutchmen increased the lead to 27-7 a couple of minutes later as Klitsch found
Blake Weaver wide open over the middle for a long 62-yard touchdown pass. LVC added to the lead on its next offensive possession of the quarter on a 10-play 84-yard drive that took nearly five minutes. Klitsch hit
Alex Vassallo with a 35-yard touchdown pass to give the Dutchmen a 34-7 advantage.
The Dutchmen worked the clock in the fourth quarter using a strong running attack that took a lot of time off the clock on their first two possessions, while the defense continued shutting down the Widener offense. The Pride capitalized on a fumble with just over three minutes left and scored on a 26-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 20 with just over two minutes remaining. LVC then ran out the clock.
