Dutchmen Ace Road Test at King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley volleyball team earned an important road win on Tuesday evening as the Dutchmen traveled up I-81 and swept King's College at the Scandlon Physical Education Center in Wilkes-Barre. The Dutchmen won by scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-22.
 
LVC (8-11, 3-1 MAC Freedom) got off to a great start against the Monarchs (11-8, 1-3 MAC Freedom) with the first four points of the match. Jillian Jefferys got things started with a point off a set from Sofia Okronley. Mattea Penner followed two straight errors by the Monarchs with an ace to make it 4-0. The lead grew to 7-1 following points from Teaguen Reynolds and Riley Mack. King's used a timeout and slowly started to dip into the lead. They used a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to 12-9. LVC responded with points by Mack and Jefferys. A Margaret Cole point, an ace by Jasmine Sullivan, and an attack error increased the advantage to 17-11. The Monarchs countered with four consecutive points to cut the lead to two. Libby Lindau had a pair of points to get the Dutchmen to 20 before the Monarchs used another three-point surge to get within two. Kylie Nagle scored on a ball that found open space, Penner recorded a block, and then Nagle served up an ace. Penner put away a feed from Nagle, and then Okronley ended the set with a strong serve.
 
The second set started just as strongly for the Dutchmen as Okronley had an ace to set the pace for a 4-0 rally. Penner had a pair of points, and Jefferys added a point as the Dutchmen went up 7-4. King's used a big 4-0 run to take its first lead of the night at 8-7. The Dutchmen used a big block assist by Cole and Mack to ignite a 7-2 run that put LVC up 14-10. Nagle and Okronley had aces during the run. The teams traded points until King's used a 3-1 rally to cut the advantage to 19-17. Sullivan and Lindau blocked a ball to start three consecutive points by the Dutchmen to push the lead to five. The Monarchs fought back and cut the lead to 23-20 before Jefferys and Reynolds ended the set with a big point and ace.
 
King's came out strong to start the third set with three of the first five points. Jefferys and Mack sandwiched an attack error by the Monarchs to put the Dutchmen up by two. King's answered with a big rally to take an 11-7 advantage. They still led 16-13 when LVC scored five consecutive points to go up by two. Lindau had three of the five points during the run. Lindau added two more big points, and then Okronley served up an ace to make it 21-18. A Penner point, a block by Jefferys, and another big point by Jefferys got LVC to match point. The Monarchs were able to score the next three points to make things interesting before Jefferys ended the match with her 14th kill of the night.
 
Inside the Box
  • Jefferys led the way with a career-high 14 kills and one solo block for 15 points. Seven of her kills came in the third set, and five came in the second.
  • Lindau finished with 10 kills and two block assists for 11 points. She had four kills in the first set and then finished strong with five in the third.
  • Penner recorded 10 points with eight kills, one ace, and one solo block. The senior also had 13 digs.
  • Reynolds added five kills, one ace, and one block assist with five digs.
  • Okronley had 23 assists, four service aces, and seven digs.
  • Sullivan recorded 13 assists, one ace, and four digs.
  • Nagle tied for a team-high 13 digs, recorded two aces, and had six assists.
  • LVC had a season-high .243 hitting percentage and was credited with nine aces.
Up Next
LVC will host York College of Pennsylvania and Neumann University on Saturday for a tri-match at Sorrentino Gymnasium. The Dutchmen will take on York at 11 a.m. and then face Neumann later in the day during the team's Dig Pink Day.
