Dutchmen Men’s Soccer Delivers Homecoming Victory Over Delaware Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Ethan Groff netted a goal late in the second half for the Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team, helping propel the program to an exciting 3-2 Homecoming victory over Delaware Valley University on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Herbert Field. Nathan Prex also played an integral role in the win, scoring two goals for LVC.

The Dutchmen (7-2-4, 1-0-1 MAC Freedom) took the first shot of the game on this rainy afternoon, as Will Burton had an attempt blocked at the 5:47 mark. The Aggies (8-3-1, 0-1-1 MAC Freedom) countered with a shot at the 8:36 mark, but this try was blocked by Lebanon Valley's defense. Delaware Valley then opened the scoring 10:46 into the first half, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Zydan Stewart. The Flying Dutchmen responded with several offensive opportunities, logging five shots over the next 5:12. During this stretch, Charlie Kramer and Prex each put a shot on goal that was saved within eight seconds in the 14th minute. Harrison Davis then sent a shot to the left of the net, and Ben Ammon had a try blocked, within 43 seconds in the 16th minute. 

This was followed by the Aggies sending a shot to the right of the goal at the 17:22 mark, before having an attempt blocked by the Dutchmen 18:30 into the contest. Delaware Valley registered a try that ended up left of the net at the 20:33 mark as well. LVC also created some scoring chances, as Nathan Kimball took a shot that went to the left of the net at the 21:41 mark, and Ammon had a try go to the left of the goal 23:00 into the first stanza. Lebanon Valley then got on the scoreboard at the 27:11 mark, tying the game at 1-1. The program tied the game when Prex took a shot on a free kick from just behind the left corner of the penalty box, which went into the upper-left side of the net for a goal. 

The Aggies responded with a shot on target 29:08 into the first half, which resulted in a save for the Dutchmen by goalkeeper Ryan Simonette. Lebanon Valley proceeded to tally four more shots before the break, including an attempt by Davis that was saved at the 29:54 mark and a try by Prex that was saved at the 35:06 mark. Ollie Lynch later sent a shot to the left of the net at the 36:10 mark, and Prex had a shot saved at the 39:07 mark. The programs went into halftime in a 1-1 tie. 

After the Flying Dutchmen attempted a couple of shots early in the second half, Delaware Valley took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Gianluca D'Alterio at the 49:01 mark. The Aggies then had a shot go above the net at the 55:29 mark, while another try was blocked by LVC's defense at the 60:40 mark. Lebanon Valley also kept working to generate offensive opportunities as the stanza progressed, as Gavin Rapp put a shot on goal that was saved 63:25 into the contest. JJ Porter also had a try that went above the net at the 65:09 mark. This was followed by Rapp having a shot blocked and Porter having an attempt go to the right of the goal during the 69th minute. 

The Dutchmen found the net again 71:34 into the game, tying things up at 2-2. Prex evened the score by sending a penalty kick shot into the right corner of the net for a goal. The program proceeded to record more shots as the second half rolled on, including an attempt on goal by Ammon that was saved at the 79:34 mark and a try by Burton that was saved at the 80:23 mark. Lebanon Valley's offense then came through at the 83:18 mark, prompting the squad to claim a 3-2 lead. Groff put LVC ahead by taking a shot from behind the center of the goal box and sending the ball into the lower-right corner of the net for a clutch goal. Burton dished out the assist on the go-ahead goal by Groff. The Flying Dutchmen went on to preserve their advantage through the end of play, securing the 3-2 victory. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Groff netted his second goal of the season while recording his first game-winner of the campaign. 
  • Prex scored his 12th and 13th goals of the year, prompting the forward to extend his first-place lead in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom. The senior also logged four points, bringing his conference-leading total to 31. 
  • Additionally, Prex posted game-highs with 10 shots and six shots on target. The senior's 10 shots tied a program record, which he previously achieved in LVC's 4-2 MAC Freedom Semifinal win over DeSales University on Nov. 1, 2023. Chris Hall also reached this mark once.
  • Burton dished out the assist on Groff's game-winning goal. 
  • Lebanon Valley outshot Delaware Valley 27-9 and had a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. LVC's 27 shots marked its most in a game this season. 
  • Ammon, Kramer, Burton, Davis, and Rapp also had a shot on target each. 
  • Simonette recorded a save during the win. 
  • LVC had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Lebanon Valley will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 4 p.m., when the program will host FDU-Florham for Senior Day at Herbert Field.
