Kathy Tierney to Receive 2025 Hot Dog Frank Award

1/9/2025 1:04:00 PM

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley College has announced that Kathy Tierney will be presented with the 2025 Hot Dog Frank Athletic Service Award.

The LVC administration established the award in 1985 to honor the late Frank Aftosmes (1902–94) for his many contributions to the Athletics Program. Aftosmes was an Annville businessman and devoted supporter of LVC Athletics, whose statue now stands in the College's Peace Garden. Since its establishment in 1985, 42 individuals have been honored for their dedication and loyalty to LVC athletics.

"For more than 20 years, Kathy Tierney served as a pioneer in elevating Dutchmen Athletics to new heights during her tenure," said Patrick Ratke LVC Director of Athletics. "Her dedication to our student-student athletes and department has been unmatched, whether coaching our field hockey team to their first final four appearance or helping our athletes to be successful in the classroom and their future careers."

Tierney, a 2008 LVC Athletic Hall of Fame and 2019 Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame inductee, spent 25 years at Lebanon Valley, first as a coach and later as an administrator. She built the Field Hockey program into a national powerhouse during her 18 seasons on the bench. As the team's head coach from 1983 to 2000, she compiled an exceptional 212-113-15 record and is LVC's all-time winningest coach in that sport. She coached the Dutchmen to 10 NCAA appearances, two NCAA final fours, and five MAC championships while coaching 29 All-Americans, and was named the conference coach of the year five times. Nine of her field hockey players have been inducted into the LVC Athletics Hall of Fame. In addition to coaching field hockey, Tierney also mentored the softball and women's lacrosse programs at LVC during the 1980s. She served as an assistant athletic director during the 1990s under former athletic director Lou Sorrentino '54.

After retiring from coaching in 2000, Tierney served as LVC's first female Director of Athletics until 2006, overseeing the continual growth of the Lebanon Valley athletic program. During her tenure, LVC added new field hockey and gymnasium facilities and completed the Heilman Center. Tierney left LVC in 2006 to become the Director of Athletics and Wellness at Bryn Mawr College, a position she held until her retirement in 2022. She has remained involved with LVC Athletics and is currently a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame Committee.

The Hot Dog Frank Athletic Service Award is given annually during halftime of a basketball game, with the tradition of free hot dogs for all fans served between the men's and women's games. Tierney will be honored during halftime of the LVC women's game against DeSales University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, with the award presented by the Aftosmes family and President James MacLaren. The men's basketball team will take on the Bulldogs at 3 p.m.
