HERSHEY, Pa. – Maeghan Howson found the net twice for the Lebanon Valley College Women's Ice Hockey team, leading three players who scored goals for the program during its 4-1 win over Hood College on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Hersheypark Arena.
Tiffany Anderson netted the game-winner for the Flying Dutchmen, while
Anna Dale also scored a goal.
The Dutchmen (11-4-1, 8-3-1 MAC) were productive defensively early in the first period, holding the Blazers (3-13-0, 1-11-0) to just one shot on goal for over eight minutes at the start. Goaltender
Lacy Bigelow made her first save 1:38 into the game, and
Leela Nemani later blocked a shot attempt at the 6:02 mark. Lebanon Valley also worked to generate offensive opportunities during the frame, as
Alex Franke took a shot on goal that was saved at the 7:13 mark before
Laura Radford's try was saved 8:37 into the first. Hood then sent another shot toward the net 10:34 into period one, and Bigelow responded with a save for LVC.
The Dutchmen also tallied more shots as the frame progressed, putting seven attempts on goal over the next 3:35, including two during a power play. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring 14:12 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. The squad got on the board with a power-play goal by Howson, courtesy of an assist by Nemani. Back on the defensive end, the Flying Dutchmen continued to limit the opposition by keeping the Blazers from registering a shot on goal during the remainder of the period.
Cheyenne Wilk contributed to these defensive efforts with a block at the 15:47 mark, and
Madelynn Debelis also blocked a shot with 11 seconds left.
Lebanon Valley was aggressive offensively at the start of the second period, as Nemani,
Erin Yorke, and
Sky Campanile each put a shot on goal within the first 1:09. Hood countered with a pair of shots on goal at the 1:20 and 1:35 marks, and Bigelow posted stops on both attempts. LVC followed this by creating more scoring chances, putting five shots on goal over the next 5:05, with two coming during a power play. The Dutchmen found the net again 6:42 into the second, taking a 2-0 advantage. The program went up by two when Anderson scored a power-play goal after assists by Campanile and Dale.
Hood's offense followed this with some opportunities, but Lebanon Valley's defense continued its strong effort. Bigelow made a save 8:16 into period two before Howson blocked a shot 31 seconds later. Bigelow then registered another important stop at the 9:09 mark. The Dutchmen also kept sending the puck toward the net, taking 10 shots on goal over the next 4:23, including two during a power play. Lebanon Valley put another point on the scoreboard 13:59 into the second, making it a 3-0 contest on Howson's second goal following an assist by
Madisyn Olson.
The Blazers responded with a goal by Sofie Ancona 15:01 into the second period, narrowing the score to 3-1. Hood tallied another shot 53 seconds later, and Bigelow came through with the save for LVC while the squad was on the penalty kill. The Flying then reclaimed a three-goal lead 17:39 into the frame, going ahead 4-1. The squad added a tally when Dale scored a short-handed goal, courtesy of an assist by Anderson.
Lebanon Valley kept battling defensively when the third period got underway, as Bigelow made a save at the 3:25 mark and another at the 5:08 mark while the team was on the penalty kill. Anderson and
Norah McCauliffe also blocked a shot each during this stretch where Hood was on a power play. The Dutchmen kept generating opportunities on the offensive end as well, as Franke took two shots while Dale and Howson each had a try within 26 seconds in the 12
th minute. All four of these attempts came during a power play for LVC.
The Flying Dutchmen then closed out the game with more strong defense, preventing the opposition from putting a shot on goal during the remaining minutes. The program didn't yield an attempt on goal after the 5:08 mark. Howson blocked a shot by the Blazers 13:52 into the third period before Radford blocked an attempt at the 14:56 mark. Anderson followed this with a block at the 16:35 mark, and Howson had another block for LVC with just 1:19 to go. Lebanon Valley went on to preserve its lead through the end of play, sealing the 4-1 victory.

- Dale scored her 17th goal of the season, which leads the MAC and ranks second in the nation. The sophomore's short-handed goal was her fifth of the campaign, which leads the nation and is a program record. Additionally, Dale had an assist on Anderson's goal.
