Wilk’s Two Goals Lead Women’s Ice Hockey to Series-Opening Win Over Hood

HERSHEY, Pa. ­­– Cheyenne Wilk scored two goals for the Lebanon Valley College Women's Ice Hockey team, helping lead the program to a 3-0 victory over Hood College on Friday, Jan. 17, at Hersheypark Arena. Tiffany Anderson also found the net for the Flying Dutchmen, while goaltender Mia Frisoni posted a shutout effort. 

The Dutchmen (10-4-1, 7-3-1 MAC) created some scoring chances early in the first period, as Maeghan Howson, Madelynn Debelis, and Erin Yorke each took a shot on goal within the first 3:48. The Blazers (3-12-0, 1-10-0 MAC) countered with some opportunities, and Lebanon Valley responded with a block by Julia Schafer at 5:34 mark before Frisoni made a save seven seconds later. The goaltender also came through with a stop 7:27 into the first. LVC continued to send the puck toward the net as the frame went on, as Anna Dale, Addison Taylert, and Yorke each put a shot on goal that was saved within 12 seconds in the 11th minute.

The Flying Dutchmen opened the scoring 11:06 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. The program got on the scoreboard when Wilk sent a shot into the net, courtesy of assists by Leela Nemani and Jess Dawe. Lebanon Valley's defense remained productive during the frame as well, as Schafer blocked another shot by Hood at the 12:26 mark, and Frisoni had a stop 14:57 into the first during a penalty kill. The Dutchmen found the net again 15:36 into the game, taking a 2-0 advantage on a short-handed goal by Wilk after an assist by Dale. Back on the defensive end, LVC closed out period one with a block by Yorke at the 17:17 mark and a save by Frisoni three seconds later. 

Lebanon Valley's offense remained aggressive when the second period got underway, tallying nine shots on goal over the first 6:08. Nemani contributed to these efforts with three attempts during this stretch, and Yorke had a try when the team was on a power play. Later in the frame, Chelly Wolff and Yorke each took a shot that was saved within 35 seconds in the 11th minute. The Blazers then took a shot at the 10:55 mark, and Frisoni was there to make the save for LVC. 

The Flying Dutchmen scored again 11:43 into the second period, taking a 3-0 lead on a goal by Anderson. Taylert and Dale were credited with the assists on the program's third goal of the night. Lebanon Valley then kept working to generate offensive opportunities as the frame progressed, logging four more shots on goal in the remaining minutes. Defensively, LVC limited Hood to just two attempts on goal during the rest of the period. Frisoni continued her dominant performance during this span, delivering saves at the 17:52 and 19:48 marks. 

The Blazers sent a shot toward the net just 50 seconds into the third period, and Frisoni came through with the save for the Dutchmen. Lebanon Valley's offense followed this with two shots on goal by Laura Radford that were saved and an attempt by Wilk that was saved over the next 5:03. Back on the defensive end, Frisoni posted a stop 7:02 into the third, and Norah McCauliffe blocked a try at the 9:47 mark when Hood was on a power play. 

The Dutchmen continued their strong defensive effort as the third period went on, as Frisoni made stops at the 13:07 and 14:06 marks while the program was on the penalty kill. LVC also created more scoring chances during the remaining minutes of the contest, recording five more shots on goal. The Blazers took their final shot of the evening with 2:29 left, and Frisoni posted her 13th save. The Flying Dutchmen then went on to preserve their three-goal advantage through the end of the contest, securing the victory.

  • Wilk's career-high two goals bring her season total to four. The senior's first goal of the night was also her first game-winner of the campaign. Wilk's short-handed goal was LVC's sixth of the season, which leads NCAA Division III and extends the program record.  
  • Anderson scored her fifth goal of the winter. The junior logged a game-high 17 faceoff wins as well. 
  • Dale dished out assists on Wilk's second goal and the goal by Anderson. The sophomore now leads the conference with 21 points this season. 
  • Nemani tallied the primary assist on Wilk's first goal. The first-year won eight faceoffs as well. 
  • Dawe had an assist on Wilk's first goal. 
  • Taylert had the primary assist on Anderson's goal. 
  • The Dutchmen outshot the Blazers 43-13. 
  • Yorke and Howson tied for a game-high five shots on goal. 
  • Frisoni made 13 saves during her third shutout of the season. This is also the seventh time Lebanon Valley has kept the opposition scoreless this winter, which sets a program record. Additionally, the team's seven shutouts are tied for the most in the nation this season. 
  • Defensively, the Flying Dutchmen blocked seven shots. 
  • LVC was successful on all three penalty kills. 
  • Schafer and Yorke tied for a game-high three blocks. 
  • Lebanon Valley had a 37-14 advantage in faceoff victories.

The Flying Dutchmen will return to the ice at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 18, when the program will take on the Blazers again at Hersheypark Arena.
