Lane Scores Goal in Field Hockey’s Battle with Bryn Mawr

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Rebecca Lane scored a first quarter goal to give the Lebanon Valley Field Hockey team an early lead before visiting Bryn Mawr College scored twice in the second half to defeat the Dutchmen 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field.

The Owls (7-1) came into the game ranked 13th in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Poll and had won five straight against other nationally ranked teams. The Dutchmen (7-1) played great defense against Bryn Mawr and frustrated the Owls all afternoon. Neither team was able to get a shot off during the first 10 minutes of action. The Owls were awarded the first penalty corner of the game in the 12th minute and a shot from the top of the circle was saved by Ella Weidenhammer. BMC had two more penalty corners in the next minute and got shots off on both, but Weidenhammer stopped one shot and Lexi Ward stepped in front to stop the other.

LVC got some offensive momentum going late in the quarter as Jillian Tait found space for the first shot of the game for the Dutchmen. Her attempt was saved but LVC collected the rebound and Lane knocked the ball into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season. The Dutchmen had a great opportunity to double the lead in the 21st minute as Jenna Angstadt had her shot off a penalty corner saved and then a rebound attempt by Sorrell Long just missed wide. Neither team was able to get a shot off the rest of the half.

Bryn Mawr was able to tie the game up 2:43 into the third quarter off a corner as a Owl forward dribbled around a defender on the right side of the circle and sent a shot through a crowd and into the back of the cage. The Dutchmen responded right back on the other end of the field as Ward had her shot from the right side saved and then Clair Weidenhammer had her rebound attempt kept out of the cage by a defender. The Owls had a couple of chances late in the quarter, but LVC held strong on defense and the game went into the final quarter tied at one.

The teams battled up and down the field over the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter. The Dutchmen had a penalty in the 53rd minute where Abby Rodenberger had an open opportunity for a shot that was blocked. The Owls had three consecutive penalty corners at the other end of the field where LVC didn't allow a shot on the first two and then Weidenhammer made a pair of big saves on the third. Bryn Mawr scored the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute on a shot that just snuck inside the left post. The Dutchmen fought valiantly to even the score up over the final minutes, but the Owl defense held strong to pick up the win.
