HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Claire Weidenhammer scored a pair of goals and
Ella Weidenhammer recorded her fourth shutout of the year to lead the Lebanon Valley Field Hockey team to a 4-0 victory at Juniata College on Wednesday evening.
The Dutchmen (8-1) had a strong bounce back from the team's first loss of the year on Saturday scoring twice in the first quarter. Juniata had the first offensive opportunity of the game in the third minute as they earned a penalty corner. The Eagles were able to get a shot off that went wide of the goal. LVC's two goals were 19 seconds apart from each other in the 11th minute. Weidenhammer gave the Dutchmen the lead at 10:32 of the quarter on the team's first shot of the game after a feed from
Sorrell Long. The Dutchmen quickly struck again as
Jillian Tait scored her first career goal at 10:51 off an assist by
Lexi Ward. The Eagles had a pair of penalty corners in the final minutes of the quarter and were able to get shots off, but the first attempt was saved by Weidenhammer and the second attempt went wide.
Juniata started the second quarter strong with a pair of back-to-back penalty corners. They were able to get a shot on goal after the second corner but once again Weidenhammer came up with a big save. LVC nearly scored early in the 25th minute but a defensive save by an Eagle defender kept a Long shot out of the back of the cage. Long had another shot saved late in the half as her shot from the top of the circle following a corner insert by Wiedenhammer was saved.
The teams battled for possession much of the third quarter with LVC recording the only shot on goal in the 15 minutes of action. They made the one shot count as Weidenhammer scored her second of the game while Ward recorded her second assist. The Eagles had two penalty corners in the quarter and the Dutchmen quickly squashed any opportunity during each corner. LVC came out firing in the fourth quarter earning three penalty corners in a span of 30 seconds during the 53rd minute. They nearly scored on the first as
Abby Rodenberger had her shot kept out of the cage by a defender for another defensive save.
Gracie Johnson then had her shot saved following a corner insertion. The Dutchmen liked what they saw and ran the same play on the next insertion and this time Johnson scored after receiving the pass back from Long.
