ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lauren Foster scored the first two goals of her career to lead the Lebanon Valley Field Hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon on Arnold Field.
The Dutchmen (9-1) controlled possession for most of the game as they limited the Griffins from even getting onto their offensive side of the field. The Dutchmen earned the first penalty corner in the second minute as
Jenna Angstadt was able to get off a pir of shots off the corner. Her first shot was saved, and the rebound effort was blocked. A couple minutes later,
Sorrell Long had her shot off another penalty corner blocked before
Claire Weidenhammer had her attempt at goal saved off the rebound. The Dutchmen continued their attack in the quarter but were unable to get a score on 10 shots with just three reaching the goalkeeper for a save.
The Dutchmen were finally able to break through in the second quarter as Foster redirected a shot from
Gracie Johnson into the back of the cage for her first career goal. Johnson sent a bouncing ball in from the right side and Foster was able to get a stick on it to redirect the shot pass the goalkeeper.
Lexi Ward had back-to-back shots saved as LVC looked to increase their lead before the half. The Dutchmen earned a penalty stroke with a minute left and Long calmly lifted the ball into the upper right corner of the cage for her seventh goal of the season.
Weidenhammer gave the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead 3:21 into the second half as she knocked a rebound in after a Griffin defender made a great defensive save on a shot by Long from the top of the circle off a penalty corner.
Mel Mercado and
Jillian Tait had shots saved in the final five minutes of the quarter before Tait redirected a feed by Long from outside the circle into the back of the cage for her second goal of the season. Long sent a bullet into the circle and Tait was able to get a stick on it and knock it into the back of the cage with five seconds left.
Foster scored her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute off an assist by Mercado to make it 5-0. LVC nearly scored again in the final minute as Johnson had a shot blocked and then Weidenhammer had a shot saved. Gwynedd Mercy had three shots at goal in the final seconds, but
Ella Weidenhammer kept all three attempts out to preserve the shutout.
Inside the Box
- LVC had a dominating 32-3 shot advantage including a 17-3 edge in shots on goal. The Dutchmen earned 21 penalty corners in the game and did not have to defend any corners.
- Foster scored the first two goals of her collegiate career on four total shots.
- Tait scored for the second consecutive game on two shots.
- Long had a goal and an assist to give her a team-high 19 points for the season. She is a perfect 3-3 on penalty strokes this season and now has seven goals off strokes in her career.
- Johnson recorded her team-leading fifth assist of the year. Her 10th career assist also gives her 44 points in three years.
- Mercado recorded her first career point with an assist.
- Claire Weidenhammer scored her team-leading ninth goal while her sister, Ella Weidenhammer recorded her fifth shutout of the year while making three saves.
