ANNVILLE, Pa. – Libby Lindau had a team-high 11 kills and Abigail Souder had five service aces as the Lebanon Valley Volleyball team defeated Hood College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon inside Sorrentino Gymnasium in Annville.
The Dutchmen (5-3) dominated the first two sets winning by scores of 25-16 and 25-14. The Blazers rallied to win the third set 25-19 before LVC closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Taylor McInerney got things going with the first kill of the match. Robyn Stepler made it 2-0 before Hood scored the next four points. The Dutchmen responded with a 4-0 run of their own ending on a Mattea Penner kill to make it 6-4. The Blazers were able to retake the lead 10-8 behind a pair of aces and attack errors by the Dutchmen. LVC came right back with a 5-0 run with Souder serving as Teaguen Reynolds and McInerney had a kill each sandwiched by two aces. It was still a two-point lead at 14-12 when LVC broke open the set with a 7-0 run with Lyla Arfanella serving. Hood managed to close the gap to 22-15 but the Dutchmen scored three of the next four points to take the set victory.
LVC jumped out to a big 9-1 lead in the second set with the help of four service aces by Robyn Stepler and Souder. The Blazers scored the next six points to cut the lead to 9-7 but Penner and Lindau scored four of the next five points for the Dutchmen to build the lead up to 14-8. The advantage was 18-12 when LVC used a 5-0 run to get within two points of winning the set. The teams traded points to close out the set as the Dutchmen took a 2-0 lead.
Hood scored first in the third set to take an early lead. Arfanella had a pair of aces to put the Dutchmen up 3-2. Hood used a 10-4 rally to retake the lead at 12-6. The Dutchmen were able to cut the lead down to 14-11 before a 4-0 rally gave the Blazers a seven-point advantage. The Blazers built the lead to 22-13 before LVC used a strong rally to cut the advantage back to four points. That was as close as the Dutchmen would get in the set as Hood extended the match with a set victory.
The teams battled back-and-forth to begin the fourth set with neither team able to gain more than a point lead through the first 16 serves. Hood used three consecutive points to go up 11-8 before the Dutchmen responded with a big 6-1 run that gave them a two-point advantage. After a Hood point, LVC used a big 5-0 run to come within three points of winning the match. Hood managed to get the lead down to 23-18 before LVC scored the final two points for the win.
Inside the Box
- Lindau had a .259 hitting percentage and was one of three Dutchmen with double digit kills. She recorded 11 kills, three aces, three total blocks, and five digs.
- Souder had five of the team's season-high 14 service aces. The libero added seven digs.
- Penner and McInerney had 10 kills apiece. Penner added four total blocks and 10 digs.
- Stepler had another big day setting the ball with 30 assists. She added nine digs and two aces.
- Arfanella led the team with 12 digs and four aces.
