GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Goalkeeper
Dalton Fitterling made a season-high seven saves for the No. 18 Lebanon Valley College Men's Soccer team, as the program dropped a close 1-0 contest to Gettysburg College on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Clark Field.
The Dutchmen and the Bullets delivered solid defensive efforts early, keeping the game scoreless during the first half. Both programs limited offensive opportunities, as neither side registered a shot attempt for nearly 11 minutes at the start. Gettysburg took the first shot on goal of the night at the 10:42 mark and tallied another 57 seconds later, but Fitterling was there to make saves on both attempts for Lebanon Valley.
The Flying Dutchmen also generated scoring chances as the opening half progressed, as
Nathan Prex took a penalty kick shot that was saved at the 24:44 mark before attempting another shot on goal that was saved at the lower-left side of the net 14 seconds later.
Logan Hicks also contributed to these offensive efforts by LVC, sending a shot toward the goalkeeper that was saved on the bottom-right side 26:34 into the match. The programs proceeded to go back and forth defensively during the remaining minutes of the first, prompting the game to enter halftime in a 0-0 tie.
Defense remained the story as the contest went into half two, as neither team recorded a shot on goal for over 13 minutes at the beginning of the stanza. Fitterling posted his third save 58:21 into the match, maintaining the scoreless tie. The goalkeeper followed this with two more important stops for LVC within a stretch of 48 seconds, which began near the end of the 60
th minute. Fitterling registered these saves at the 59:51 and 60:39 marks.
Lebanon Valley also worked to create offensive opportunities as the second half went on, as
Aaron Weitzel took a shot that was saved near the bottom-center of the net 65:21 into the stanza. On the defensive end, Fitterling logged another save 80:16 into the match. Gettysburg then scored 82:20 into the contest, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chase Sempervive. The Dutchmen kept battling during the remainder of the game, as
Nolan Ross took a shot for LVC that went above the net during the final minute. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of play.
