Field Hockey Shuts Out Lions to Stay Unbeaten

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Field Hockey team improved to 3-0 with a 1-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday evening in front of a big crowd at Arnold Field in Annville.

The Dutchmen controlled possession for most of the contest and limited the chances that Penn State Harrisburg (2-2) had on their offensive end of the field. LVC had an early opportunity to score as a foul in the circle led to a penalty stroke just 34 seconds in. Claire Weidenhammer's stroke attempt just sailed left of the cage to keep the game scoreless. The Lion's stingy defense limited the Dutchmen to just two more shots in the quarter, both of which went wide of goal. The Dutchmen did an excellent job keeping the ball on their offensive side of the field in the first 15 minutes.

The action intensified in the second quarter as Jenna Angstadt had a shot go wide and then the Lions had a shot blocked in the opening minutes. Lexi Ward found open space late in the 19th minute, but her shot was saved by the goalkeeper. LVC earned a penalty corner following the save and the Dutchmen had two attempts at the cage, but Sorrell Long's shot was blocked and then a shot by Rebecca Lane sailed high. The Lions were able to get a shot off late in the quarter as Ella Weidenhammer kicked the attempt away for her first save of the game.

Lane began the second half action with her shot attempt getting blocked in the first minute of the third quarter. The Dutchmen had a couple of early penalty corners but were not able to get off a shot against the Lions. LVC was finally able to break through in the 40th minute off a penalty corner as Angstadt sent a cross in from the left wing that Ward was able to get a stick on and redirect into the back of the cage for her second goal of the season. The Dutchmen had another great opportunity late as Jillian Tait got behind the defense and had a great look at the cage, but her shot was stopped by the keeper.

Tait began the fourth quarter with another great look at goal but once again her shot was kept out of the back of the cage. In the 51st minute, the Dutchmen had a pair of shots kept out off a penalty corner as Long's shot was blocked and then Abby Rodenberger had her attempt kicked away by the keeper. Long had a pair of shots saved in the 58th minute before the Dutchmen controlled possession and ran out the rest of the clock for the victory.
